Pennsylvania Woman Says Church Food Program Promised $200 in Groceries but Box Fell Far Short: ‘I Feel Deceived’

The whole thing feels like a scam and deserves the call-out

Pennsylvania Woman Calls Out Food Distributor for Falsifying $200 Value Food Handout to Those in Need

A Pennsylvania woman decided to utilize a food distribution service owned by a local church for some extra help with groceries. Unfortunately, the experience wasn’t what she expected. She walked away with much less than promised, and now she’s calling them out for it.

TikToker @grunbun90 experienced something especially irritating when she utilized a food distribution service through His Food Ministry. This program is church-owned and boasts that it feeds families in their community following Sunday church service. Recently, the service advertised “$200 worth of groceries” that will last families “weeks.” This TikToker starts her video by showing a small amount of food on a table and asks, “Does this look like $200 worth of groceries to you?”

@grunbun90

This was my experience going to a Food Distribution Ministry through a church here in Derry PA, and it didn’t go how I was hoping. The value of the box that we purchased was NO WHERE NEAR the quoted $200 value, and the pastor DID NOT like when I said something. Let’s talk about it. #church #food #help #fyp

As Grun states, “I’m not ungrateful for help, but the help was misleading.” According to her, they asked for a $20 donation and, in return, you receive enough food for several weeks. After she donated, she received the box of food. She brought it home and was shocked by what she discovered, as she says it would never last several weeks. In the box, they gave her some Chick-fil-A chicken patties and biscuits. They gave her a can of soup, Pop-Tarts, a bag of popcorn, a bag of cookies, some soda, and some toilet paper. As a family of nine, she said there is no way that this will keep them fed more than a few days.

Grun believes this program is a complete waste of people’s time and a false advertisement. They drove 35 minutes to utilize this program. Now, she said she feels like she was “deceived” and let the program know how she felt about the small amount of groceries. After telling them how she felt, she said the pastor in charge spoke with her. According to her, he told her, “We are not a food bank and I’m done with you, so go.” He told her he bought the chicken from Chick-fil-A for its actual price and then resells it at a “heavy discount.”

Grun took it a step further and found out they were deceived about the Chick-fil-A price. The donation program he utilizes already sells the chicken at a discount, so he lied to them about that. On top of that, she felt like how they picked apart packs of food was “totally misleading.” Grun and her husband bought two boxes of food for $20 a piece. However, she says they don’t even think the boxes were worth $20, much less $200. She asks, “A $20 donation for what?!”

After posting her call-out video, various commenters responded, appalled by what Grun and her family experienced. Commenters shared with her how they would handle these matters, with one stating, “Contact the Chick-fil-A and let them know he’s reselling what they’re donating.” Another added, “Most of it is Dollar Tree Food, shame on them.”

One commenter asked, “Hold up – they are charging you $20 for food that was donated to them? The fact they advertise the value as $200 is a complete scam.” Another commenter stated, “Churches are for profit businesses that scam their communities!” Commenters continue to share their opinions and reactions on Grun’s video. Many also share what they would do if they experienced the same scamming behavior.
