Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is celebrating what he calls a “historic victory” after a judge ruled against TikTok in a case contested on how the social media giant represented its safety features for children. Paxton says the decision makes Texas the first state in the country to hold TikTok liable for misleading consumers about protections designed to shield minors from inappropriate content.

The ruling comes as Paxton continues a broader campaign against major technology and social media companies over how their platforms affect children. Critics have responded to the attorney general’s X post, questioning his motives and consistency on issues involving children.

The attorney general’s X post says, “BREAKING: I just secured a historic victory making Texas the first state in the nation to hold TikTok liable for harming children.” Attached to the post is a detailed document about the ruling, including the fact that District Judge Cory Liu “has found TikTok liable for lying about its safety standards and concealing the truth about the prevalence of inappropriate and explicit material.”

The case dates back to January 2025, when Paxton sued TikTok under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act. His office accused the company of misleading parents by promoting its platform as safe for minors while downplaying how frequently younger users could encounter content involving drugs, nudity, alcohol, and profanity.

A major part of the dispute involves TikTok’s Restricted Mode, which was designed to limit exposure to mature content. The court determined that TikTok misrepresented the effectiveness of the feature and violated Texas consumer-protection law by giving users false assurances about the protections it provides minors.

Paxton has pursued similar cases against other major online platforms. In August, his office reached a settlement worth more than $1 billion with Meta that requires new protections for younger users, including stricter age-assurance measures, limits on teen usage, and additional parental controls.

Comments and Reactions to Ken Paxton’s TikTok Victory

Rather than focusing solely on TikTok, several commenters responding to Paxton turned their attention towards the attorney general himself. One person said, “Since when do you care about children?”, while another questioned whether the decision would actually improve safety for younger users.

Others questioned what the ruling could mean for ordinary TikTok users, including whether stronger age-verification requirements could eventually become part of the platform’s experience in Texas. Another commenter wrote, “So are we going to need a photo ID just to use TikTok now? This doesn’t do anything to help children. Paxton throwing this nonsense out and just now pretending to care about high prices on everything is unbelievable.”

The criticism continued throughout the replies, with some commenters raising unrelated controversies and accusations involving Paxton and other political figures. Regardless of the response, more and more people continue to leave their opinions and frustrations in the comments section below.
