Texas state Rep. James Talarico is a well-known critic of President Donald Trump and his allies, particularly Ken Paxton and Ted Cruz. Even so, Talarico has revealed that he’s actually grateful to Trump for one particular thing. The Texas representative was able to turn one of Trump’s insults into an unexpected campaign boost as he revealed in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel that quickly became a viral talking point.
Talarico, the Democratic nominee challenging Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for a U.S. Senate seat, appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in an interview that was posted to YouTube rather than broadcast on ABC. Kimmel’s show described the online video as one the “FCC doesn’t want you to see,” after the host said the agency had threatened him, the program, ABC, affiliates, and local stations over editorial decisions and guest bookings.
The interview reportedly drew more than 5.3 million views by Friday night, with viewers quickly sharing their reactions online. But the biggest surprise came when Talarico explained why he was actually grateful to Trump. The president has repeatedly mocked Talarico by calling him “Talafreako,” describing him as a “freaky guy.” Instead of taking offense, Talarico turned the nickname into campaign merchandise.
“I am excited to announce we have ‘I’m a Talafreako’ t-shirts,” Talarico told Kimmel. “It’s actually the fastest-selling item on our website! We’re grateful to the president for the nickname,” the Democratic representative revealed. The reaction from viewers was largely enthusiastic. One commenter called the merchandise “genius,” while another said “Talafreako” was a “great pro-Talarico slogan.”
Critics can’t help but talk about the Kimmel censorship
Other commenters, however, were focused on the fact that the interview was not televised, arguing that efforts to keep it off ABC may have generated even more attention. “The Streisand effect in work again,” one viewer wrote, saying the interview could receive more views online than it would have on television. Another agreed, declaring, “Trump is discovering the Streisand Effect here.”
The political implications were also clear in the comments, with some viewers portraying Talarico as a candidate capable of appealing beyond traditional Democratic voters. “The fact that Republicans don’t want us to hear Talarico is all the reason we need to know that he’s the right man for the job,” points out one commenter.
