A Michigan woman says a dispute with her neighbor over several maple trees has grown into a larger court battle. The neighbor allegedly cut down the trees without permission, leading the family to file a police report and collect photographs and other evidence. The woman’s wife recently brought that material to court, where they learned the case would not remain in small claims court.

Tree law is crazy

The story was shared on the woman’s TikTok account, TheArtOfWahr, and has received more than one million views. The update drew strong reactions from viewers, many of whom were already familiar with tree-law disputes and encouraged the family to continue documenting the case.

The woman explained that a court official determined the dispute did not belong in small claims court because of the potential value involved under Michigan’s tree laws. According to her account, the family was told they could potentially seek up to three times the value of the trees. She also described the matter as involving trespassing, which was part of the reason the family had previously filed a police report.

The woman said the neighbor appeared surprised by the development. After leaving court, the neighbor questioned why the couple had not spoken about the dispute in months. The woman’s wife reminded the neighbor that they had previously discussed the situation and that the neighbor had explained that the remaining stumps could not be removed because of the cost.

The neighbor reportedly did not remember that conversation and revealed that a proposal had been prepared to have the stumps removed before snowfall. By then, however, the family had already moved forward with the court case.

The woman said her wife made clear that the earlier conversation had taken place before the legal proceedings began. The family now plans to pursue the dispute under Michigan’s tree and trespassing laws.

Michigan Woman’s Tree Drama Has Viewers Hooked

Viewers quickly focused on the potential costs associated with tree-law cases. One commenter wrote, “I stand with the Lorax lesbians… we speak for the trees.” Others urged the family to make sure any judgment could actually be collected, while some mentioned the possibility of placing a lien on property if damages went unpaid. Several commenters shared their own experiences with tree disputes, including one person who claimed they received $10,000 for a single tree.

The value of mature trees also became a major topic, with viewers expressing surprise at how expensive large trees can be. Others encouraged the woman to seek advice from a lawyer familiar with tree law and pointed to online communities dedicated to similar cases.

Meanwhile, the neighbor’s proposal to remove the stumps before snowfall became an easy target for jokes, adding another layer to an already unusual court dispute.

Apparently, even trees can turn a neighborhood disagreement into a legal headache.
