A man in Los Angeles, California, claimed he was kicked out of a Hollywood pub after he said “Free Palestine” while inside the establishment. Then, the pub’s bouncer gave him an awkward explanation that viewers struggled to understand.
Sam, also known as sam_music2000, shared his experience online. He is a music producer and DJ who often shares his work online, including musical transitions and mixing. The clip attached above, while off-brand, became his biggest one yet. It garnered 313,300 views, 42,300 likes, and more than 2,000 comments.
The California man, according to the clip’s caption, was at Barbey’s Beanery in West Hollywood. It is described as a roadhouse gastropub and has multiple locations in California. Sam’s stay at the pub, however, was cut short. According to him, what sentenced him to an immediate kick-out was the fact that he said “Free Palestine.”
“Manager kicks me out for saying Free Palestine cause it hurt someone’s feelings,” Sam wrote in his video’s description.
Confusing Interaction
While outside the Barney’s Beanery, Sam engaged in a brief back-and-forth with the bouncer. The latter somehow equated saying “Free Palestine” to saying “[expletive] slavery” to Black people. Confused, the California musician asked for clarification, and the bouncer, again, said his piece.
“When you say ‘Free Palestine,’ that’s essentially the same thing as saying to a group of Black people, ‘[expletive] slavery,'” the bouncer said. “Like it didn’t happen or you didn’t suffer. You understand what you do to people?“
Essentially, what the bouncer was trying to convey is that cussing out slavery was denying its existence. Still, similar slogans such as “[expletive] cancer” are interpreted as combative against the very word that is being cussed out. Sam, understandably, objected to this comparison, but the bouncer said that it was still a “politically charged statement.”
Reactions
Viewers were equally confused and even outraged by Sam’s alleged kickout. One said, “The bouncer seems confused.” Another one commented, “That’s not what ‘[expletive] slavery’ means either. Like, [expletive] cancer means you don’t like it.”
Others planned to boycott the establishment after Sam’s accusations. One wrote, “Okay, great, will NEVER go to Barney’s again. Actually, I’m about to call them & give them a piece of my mind.” Another one added, “We genuinely live amongst so many evil people.”
A user who identified himself as the manager on duty said that Sam had actually been kicked out for “picking fights with people all night.” The comment was met with criticism, and Sam said he was going to post more clips online.
