Two New York police officers became involved in a prolonged argument after they stopped a woman walking her dog in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood at approximately 3 a.m. The woman continuously asked why she was being stopped, while bystanders confronted the officers and insisted on knowing what she had done wrong.
The nearly 17-minute clip was uploaded to TikTok by @nuyoricannomad. It begins with the woman already protesting their actions, repeatedly telling them not to touch her or her dog.
The officers say they only want her to get onto the sidewalk. She says she already is and claims she had the walk signal when she crossed. When there is disagreement about where she was standing, one officer asks for her name and threatens to arrest and jail her if she refuses to identify herself.
The woman insists she has done nothing wrong, says she is a nurse, and notes she has no criminal record. The situation turns more uncomfortable when she says to an officer, “You’re hurting me,” and keeps asking him to take his hands off her. She also questions why he is holding her arm and preventing her from moving away.
Meanwhile, the bystanders are not willing to let the encounter pass without challenging the officers. They repeatedly tell them that she is simply walking her dog. They ask for the officers’ badge numbers, photograph their cruiser, and call 911.
The officers keep telling the spectators to back up, but the crowd insists that they’re already back. The bystanders also ask for a supervisor several times. The woman continues to challenge the officers’ account, claiming the cops are looking for trouble rather than dealing with actual criminals.
The footage captures the argument continuing over whether she was walking on the sidewalk or in the street, and whether the officers had any reason to stop her.
A supervisor eventually arrives and orders the bystanders to move farther back. He warns that if they interrupt the officers again, they could both be arrested. The woman continues protesting, telling him, “You have made me unsafe. You have touched me. You have violated my rights.”
Internet Reacts to New York Officers Stopping Woman Walking Her Dog
The physical contact during the encounter particularly unsettled viewers. One commenter wrote, “This makes me so uncomfortable the way he’s pulling the leash.” Another demanded consequences, saying, “Time for them to get fired. Expeditiously.”
One viewer described feeling frightened by the footage and questioned what could have justified the stop: “omg. this genuinely terrifies me. thank god she wasn’t alone. this cannot become acceptable. what was the actual issue? the sweet angel baby dog? dancing? being a woman out at night? so unsettling.” Another questioned the officer’s handling of the woman, commenting, “No real cop would grab a wrist like that.”
One person was equally critical of the officers’ priorities, writing, “The young woman walking her dog is clearly a threat, NOT! What an embarassmant these ‘officers’ should be dealing with REAL CRIME. Pathetic!”
The recording does not establish the precise reason for the initial stop, whether a summons was ultimately issued or whether the woman was arrested. It also does not show the dog being taken away.
The officers’ account of the encounter is not fully established in the footage.
