The Michigan House of Representatives recently passed a resolution to condemn socialism, sparking reactions online. Michigan residents criticized the Republican-led victory, calling it a distraction while lawmakers fail to solve the real problems locals face.
As reported by The Midwesterner, lawmakers approved House Resolution 373 with a 58-34 vote, mostly along party lines, with 18 Democrats not voting. Only one Democrat voted in favor of the resolution, while the overwhelming majority of Republicans voted for it.
The resolution condemns socialism and any politicians who support it, including the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which has been rising politically lately. It also formally opposes Marxism and any “socialist policies” in Michigan. However, it does not explain in detail what these policies would be.
Michigan Reacts to Resolution Condemning Capitalism
The resolution enraged Michigan liberals, who opposed the Republican-led effort against socialism on r/Michigan. One person wrote: “Our country is in free fall and the electorate is to blame for voting in these morons that would rather vote to condemn something they enjoy. Fire department and police… socialism. Public roads… socialism. Can go on and on.”
Others agreed: “If you receive social security you participate in socialism funded by the government. If you put money into a collection plate you participate in socialism funded by religion. If you pay an insurance premium or receive an insurance benefit you participate in socialism funded by business. If you are a republican politician, ‘socialism’ is a term for anything you don’t like.”
A seemingly angry user argued: “So where’s the resolution to condemn capitalism, which has devastated countries and the world an uncountable number of times more than socialism or communism ever have?”
What really irritated some users was how these moves were seemingly being used to dodge actual policies, in their opinion: “I think we need to really appreciate this. This is the real work. We really don’t need politicians to vote on things that reduce costs for Michiganders, and we don’t need them voting on giving greater access to healthcare.”
Someone else said: “So tired of these purity tests. Condemn socialism? Socialism has been propped up as a boogeyman. High level, it’s the working class having the most power, not the top 10% at the top. In reality, there’s no true version of any of these economic societies. America says they use capitalism. But that’s a lie. There aren’t free markets.”
Because the resolution is not a law, it does not block any policies from being implemented, serving primarily as political messaging.
