Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is facing criticism after an Iranian-American attendee confronted him during a University of Michigan town hall meeting and repeatedly asked him to condemn Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The tense exchange became increasingly emotional as the attendee described what he said members of his own family experienced under Iran’s government and pleaded with El-Sayed to take a clearer position.

The exchange quickly spread online, where critics accused the Michigan Democrat of avoiding a straightforward question while supporters of his position could point to his explicit opposition to US military intervention.

🚨 UPDATE: In a SHOCKING incident, a young Iranian-American tells MI Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed that his family was hunted and k*lled by the Islamists in Iran — and asks Abdul to CONDEMN the IRGC…

…Abdul refused IN HIS FACE.

The confrontation featured in the video above happened during a Students vs. Billionaires town hall at the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor, part of a statewide campus tour. The person who was speaking with El-Sayed was identified as Iman Sashti, who told the Democrat that his cousin has been pursued by the IRGC because of how she wore her hijab and said his uncle had been sentenced to death and received 50 lashes under the Iranian government, quite literally saying, “We’re dying.”

El-Sayed responded by saying the United States has too often behaved as “the world’s policeman” and distinguished supporting democratic movements from using American military power to overthrow foreign governments. He said he would “always stand for and with the democratic movement,” but argued that determining Iran’s leadership should be the responsibility of the Iranian people rather than the United States.

The confrontation carries additional political weight because El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary in August and is now running against Republican former Representative Mike Rogers for the seat being vacated by retiring Senator Gary Peters.

Comments and Reactions to Abdul El-Sayed’s Exchange Over Iran

Critics responding to the viral exchange focused heavily on El-Sayed’s decision not to give the direct answer Dashti was seeking. “He didn’t answer!” one person wrote, while another claimed the candidate was “incapable” of answering questions that could put him at odds with Islam and argued that he should not serve in the federal government.

Others viewed the moment through the lens of the Michigan Senate election and immediately brought El-Sayed’s Republican opponent into the conversation. A different commenter bluntly wrote, “Probably the greatest ad for Mike Rogers! This guy just showed again his true colors.“

The most emotional criticism, however, remained centered on the Iranian protesters and Dashti’s repeated demand for a clearer response. Currently, as the video continues to go viral, more people are leaving their opinions and frustrations in the comments section below.
