Texas Mother Slammed for Telling Her Son He’s Allowed to Take Down the Ten Commandments From Classrooms: ‘The left’s appeal is embracing sin’

It’s a law

A Texas mother is facing backlash after sharing a video in which she admitted that she told her son he was allowed to take down the Ten Commandments from his classroom.

The mother’s video comes as Texas law requires public elementary and secondary schools to display the Ten Commandments in a conspicuous location in every classroom. Senate Bill 10 took effect on September 1, 2025, and requires schools to display a durable poster or framed copy containing the specified version of the Ten Commandments. The display must be at least 16 inches wide and 20 inches tall.

Freedom of religion is a First Amendment right. And that means Christianity does not get a special exemption from the Constitution. That means you are free to practice your faith, teach it in your home, worship as you choose, and raise your children according to your beliefs. But public schools are not churches. No child should have to surrender their religious freedom at the classroom door. Christian nationalism has no place in a public institution that belongs to everyone. You don’t protect religious freedom by putting one religion above the rest. You protect it by making sure no religion is imposed on everyone else. That’s what religious freedom means. For everyone. And that includes the freedom from government-imposed religion. #FirstAmendmentRight #ReligiousFreedom #ChristianNationalism #TXPublicSchools #ReligiousBias

The woman shared a video on TikTok with the text, “Not raising a Christian over here.” In the video, the mother explained that she had attended a parent-teacher conference at her son’s school. She claimed that she said, “I’m not down with y’all posting the 10 Commandments in the classrooms. I’m not down with that.”

The mother then said that the school had not put up the Ten Commandments yet. However, she told her son that once they were displayed, he had the right to take them down. She then laughed about what she had told her son as the video came to an end.

In the caption, the mother also shared her views on religious freedom and the First Amendment. “Freedom of religion is a First Amendment right. And that means Christianity does not get a special exemption from the Constitution. That means you are free to practice your faith, teach it in your home, worship as you choose, and raise your children according to your beliefs,” she wrote.

She also argued that public schools are not churches and that no child should “surrender their religious freedom” at the classroom door. She further wrote, “Christian nationalism has no place in a public institution that belongs to everyone. You don’t protect religious freedom by putting one religion above the rest.”

The mother’s opposition is in line with broader criticism of the Texas law from people who argue that requiring the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms raises concerns about religious freedom and the separation of church and state. At the same time, supporters of the law argue that displaying the Ten Commandments recognizes their historical and cultural significance and does not prevent students from practicing other religions.

Viewers Slam Texas Mother Over Ten Commandments Opinion

The Texas mother’s video drew criticism online, with some viewers arguing that she should not have encouraged her son to take down the Ten Commandments. “Those children should then be expelled. We haven’t allowed children to tear up LGBT advocacy items in our schools,” one person wrote. Another person said, “The left’s appeal is embracing sin. Their moral foundation isn’t biblical. It is entirely impulsive and reflexive ideological responsive rage against Trump (and men). What a terrible way to live.”

More people criticized the mother, with one person writing, “So she’s okay if I instruct my grandkids to tear down any pride flag they see? I hope she has the same energy for that!” Others supported the mother’s position. “As a teacher, thank you. I’m not ok with it either. I cried today when they hung mine up in my classroom,” one person said. Another teacher wrote, “As a teacher in TX thank you! Hanging that on my wall was so painful for me as a survivor of extreme religious abuse. I legally had to hang it up but if a student destroys it I don’t have to replace it. BUT if someone donates another one I would have to hang it up to comply with state law.”

The reactions to the video reflected differing views on the Texas law requiring the Ten Commandments to be displayed in public school classrooms. Some supported the mother’s opposition, while others argued that parents should not encourage their children to remove the displays, even if they disagree with the law.
