Coming after who?

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told a New York town hall that ICE is a product of the post-9/11 “surveillance state establishment,” warning that the agency uses artificial intelligence and facial recognition and is “coming after you, regardless of your status.” A Fox News clip of the remarks circulated on X, where users quickly split over whether the warning described real enforcement tools or amounted to fearmongering.

AOC issues a fiery warning during a New York town hall, declaring that ICE is a product of the post-9/11 "surveillance state establishment."

The video shows Ocasio-Cortez on stage under a “More Perfect University” banner. She tells the crowd ICE is “going after every man, woman, and child” because “the CEO of Geo Group and the CEO of CoreCivic, they’ve got profits at the end of the quarter to post,” and that Republican members “like to invest in those stocks right before they authorize funding for ICE.” “They’re all on the take,” she said.

She then called ICE “a new agency created in the surveillance-state establishment after 9/11,” adding: “ICE is Palantir. ICE is AI. ICE is facial recognition. ICE is surveillance. And ICE is coming after you, regardless of your status.”

In the same stretch, she said that was “not to say that there shouldn’t be any enforcement,” arguing violations should “go through our criminal justice system” with “due process,” and described ICE as “a black box, unconstitutional system that can be used to disappear people.” The footage does not show the question she was answering, and it does not document the stock trades she cited.

Politico USA published the same remarks as a warning that ICE functions more as a surveillance operation than ordinary law enforcement.

Online Split After AOC’s ICE Surveillance Warning

Some users treated the surveillance warning as overstated. “Maybe tone down the fearmongering? She threw in some technology buzzwords and is telling everyone ‘they’re coming after you,’” one account wrote.

Another said, “If you are here illegally and self-deport, ICE can’t come after you, just saying,” while a third argued ICE’s work predates the congresswoman: “Someone want to tell this tool that ICE (INS) has been around longer than she’s been alive?”

Others focused on who is actually targeted. “ICE is not after everybody,” one commenter wrote. A different user said she “wasn’t so much against the surveillance state when they were going after J6ers.”

A smaller set took the technology point more seriously. One viewer wrote that Ocasio-Cortez is “absolutely onto something when she talks about how massive and creeping the surveillance state has become,” then added that framing ICE as “this all-knowing, sci-fi AI villain” still “feels a lot more like spinning a narrative of pure panic.”

On the longer clip, another replied, “ICE has already come for citizens, so you’re a bit behind the curve.”

The clip is now part of a wider argument over what ICE is authorized to do and how far its tools should reach. It continues to circulate as audiences weigh her warning against claims that the agency isn’t coming after people in the country legally.
