Ohio Liberals Celebrate as Gov. Mike DeWine’s SNAP Soda Ban Suffers Last Minute Delay: ‘We’re having an extra pack of ramen tonight’

SNAP recipients in Ohio will still be able to purchase soda and other sugary beverages after a controversial restriction scheduled for October 1 was abruptly postponed.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services confirmed that the state is pausing its planned ban at the request of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Administration. Federal officials want additional time to publish a formal notice and consider public comments before Ohio implements the program.

The proposed restriction emerged from recommendations developed by a working group assembled under Republican Gov. Mike DeWine. It would prevent SNAP benefits from covering beverages that list sugar, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, or another caloric sweetener as a primary ingredient. Fountain drinks would also be excluded.

When federal approval was initially announced, ODJFS Director Matt Damschroder celebrated it as a public-health victory.

“This waiver that we requested and received through the USDA is a meaningful step toward better health outcomes for Ohioans on food assistance,” Damschroder said.

Supporters argue that taxpayer-funded assistance should promote healthier choices. Critics counter that the policy unfairly polices low-income shoppers while allowing everyone else to purchase the same products without government scrutiny.

Ohio Locals Celebrate SNAP Delay

That frustration is visible in a Reddit discussion among SNAP recipients about the broader benefit changes arriving in October. Commenters largely dismissed the modest cost-of-living increase as meaningless against higher grocery prices.

“We’re having an extra pack of ramen tonight boys, loosen your belts!” one person joked after learning that the maximum benefit for a single recipient would rise by only several dollars.

Another commenter was more direct: “Our gov’t is a joke…$8 increase when we are seeing soaring prices?”

The conversation also became political after someone told recipients they could simply work. Another user responded, “Most recipients of SNAP do work,” while a separate commenter noted that many beneficiaries are elderly, disabled, or children.

That anger provides important context for Ohio’s proposed restriction. While recipients describe struggling to afford meat and other staples, state officials are preparing rules controlling which drinks can enter their shopping carts.

For now, however, the plan remains frozen. ODJFS said Ohio will wait for additional federal guidance before announcing another implementation date, leaving recipients and retailers uncertain about when the restriction will begin.
