The number of extra fees and tips added to services and products in the modern day has become outrageous. This is why Reddit user Grasping_at_straws felt it proper to post a photo of their receipt from a restaurant at Newark Airport in New Jersey. The predicament? Straws’ receipt showed a $1.70 charge for having the egg removed from a sandwich.
“$1.70 to NOT put an egg on my sandwich?” Straws remarked. They had ordered a steak, egg, and cheese sandwich but requested the mayo and egg be removed. Removing the mayo was free, but removing the egg apparently wasn’t, according to the receipt. “Airport price gouging is the worst,” wrote Straws.
Plenty of Redditors were in disbelief that someone could be charged for having an ingredient removed. “In future order it normally then extract your own egg and mayo, dump them on the counter and demand a $1.70 refund,” suggested a commenter. “Charging extra to skip something is a weird flex,” snickered another.
“Technically, you were also taxed on that amount so it’s around 1.80$ to not add the egg,” pointed out a Redditor. “Round it up to 2 bucks. What a time to be alive.” Countless others joined in the fun, calling the removed fee a sort of “effort tax” on the worker’s part. Jokes aside, OP explained in the comments what they believe actually happened.
OP Clarifies That the Egg Removal Fee Was a Kiosk Error
In response to someone questioning whether this “egg removal fee” on the receipt was a fluke from a kiosk, Straws wrote, “$1.70 is also the price to add an egg, so most likely an error when programming the kiosk.” A top commenter claiming to be someone who repairs these kiosks further clarified, “The guy who set up the button must have accidentally forgot to put a minus sign when setting it up – and nobody noticed or bothered to tell him otherwise.”
In the end, OP wasn’t too concerned about the mistake fee and even said they laughed about it with the workers at the shop. Still, the fact that some Redditors believed this could have been real goes to show what sort of economic state we’re in right now, where paying to have an egg removed from a sandwich seems plausible.
