‘Sorry the Portland Public School System Failed You’: Oregon Bar Openly Mocks Customer Who Complained About 100% Tip Option

If there’s one thing almost every customer hates, it’s being pressured into leaving big tips, but one Oregon restaurant takes this concept to another level. A bar called Good Girl gives patrons the option to tip 100%, essentially doubling whatever they spend on drinks. Considering people are often already intoxicated by the time they are paying the bill, many online users believe it could be deceptive to have 100% as an option, if not simply outrageous.

Reddit user Wise_Score_6471 shared a screenshot on r/mildlyinfuriating of someone blasting Good Girl via a 1-star review over its excessive tipping option. Staff responded to the negative feedback with a snarky reply, starting with “Sorry the Portland public school system failed you.” They explained that you can choose not to tip and that the 100% option is meant as a joke.

“We don’t take ourselves seriously, and neither should you,” the response concludes. Needless to say, many took this rather cold comment as hostility towards an alleged customer with a valid complaint. After all, who wants to be pressured to double their bill at a bar?

“Oh cool so if it’s a joke and they don’t take it seriously, then they refund patrons the 100% tip option and don’t keep it,” suggested a Redditor. “The fact this is a bar, and they know their clientele will probably be drunk and not notice makes it way, way worse,” accused another. “They are intentionally trying to get more money off of drunk people not noticing how much they’re paying–like 100%.”

The Rude Response Is On Brand for the Portland Bar

While there’s nothing wrong with being upset over an outrageous tipping option, Good Girl’s seemingly rude response to a customer is actually on par with its brand. In fact, Portland Mercury has even reported that the bar markets itself as offering “rude” service to its clientele.

This isn’t the first time Good Girl has been questioned over its tipping culture, with the bar being mentioned and criticized in an older post on r/Portland. Regardless, the 100% tip is optional, and staff are meant to treat customers with attitude, though it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea or, in this case, shot of whiskey.

That said, if someone wants their tips to go to someone besides the girls working there, Good Girl offers “Sunday Service,” where, on the first and last Sunday of the month, 100% of tips go to charity.
