‘The Cruelty Is the Point’: Colorado Residents Lash Out Over Medicaid Cuts Affecting Legal Immigrants

Colorado’s Medicaid cuts spark upset

Thousands of legal immigrants in Colorado are losing Medicaid coverage this week, and furious locals are turning their anger toward the Republican administration behind the federal changes.

An estimated 5,900 documented immigrants in the state are affected starting October 1, according to The Denver Post. Those losing access include refugees, people granted asylum or humanitarian parole, some victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, and certain Native Americans born in Canada.

The restriction comes from H.R. 1, the Republican-backed spending law signed by President Donald Trump in July 2025. The law narrowed which immigration categories remain eligible for federally funded Medicaid beginning October 1, 2026.

Green card holders, certain Cuban and Haitian immigrants, and people covered by the Compact of Free Association can still qualify. Legally present children and pregnant or postpartum adults in Colorado also retain coverage in some otherwise affected groups.

But the reaction among Denver-area Reddit users was pretty fierce.

“Good ole Christian values,” one commenter wrote beneath the story, which was an obvious swipe at the politics behind the cuts.

‘What Are These Folks Going to Do? Just Die?’

The Medicaid change quickly became a rallying point for grievances stretching far beyond immigration.

One Colorado commenter said they had also lost coverage despite being a U.S. citizen, adding: “Universal Healthcare Now!” Another described a wife with insurance being turned away by an in-network clinic because the insurer allegedly had not paid its bill, asking: “What’s the point of even having insurance?”

Others aimed their anger at Republicans.

“The cruelty is the point,” one commenter alleged, arguing that hostility toward immigrants was driving the policy. Another responded to the impending loss of coverage with the stark question: “So…what are these folks going to do? Just die?”

Not everyone was on the same wavelength of finger-pointing at Republicans, though. Some others argued immigrants should pay for their own healthcare or questioned the cost of providing public benefits, exposing a sharp divide over who should receive taxpayer-funded coverage.

Still, much of the discussion kept returning to something broader than immigration: frustration with the American healthcare system itself.

Commenters complained about punishing income limits, soaring medical costs, insurers and a system where even having coverage does not always guarantee affordable treatment. Several called for a national single-payer system.

That debate is only likely to intensify. The Congressional Budget Office previously estimated that Medicaid provisions in H.R. 1 would leave millions more Americans uninsured by 2034.
