A California woman was labeled racist after she almost ruined a park proposal by harassing the photographers.
The photographer shared the incident online, and it reportedly took place at Crescent Bay Point Park. He added text over the video that read, “racist lady almost ruins proposal ‘go back to Mexico’.”
As the photographer and a female photographer accompanying him hid and waited for the couple, the woman approached them and stood in front of them. “The park is for people that live here to enjoy the park and have picnics, and they don’t allow events on the grass here for that reason,” she told them.
The female photographer tried to handle the situation as the words “trying to keep it respectful” appeared on the video. “Yeah, I understand them,” she said. The woman then repeated that people come to the park to enjoy it before saying that she had called the police on them. “They’re coming out here. They’re gonna make you tear it down,” she said.
The female photographer continued trying to remain polite, addressing the woman as “ma’am” and telling her that she understood her concerns and that they would be leaving soon. “No, I don’t care. It’s every single [expletive] weekend and I’m sick and tired of it,” the woman responded.
“We weren’t here last weekend,” the female photographer responded. Despite this, the woman continued arguing with them and told them to ask someone to tear down the setup for the proposal. “Just tell him to tear it down or you’re gonna have to anyway. I’m sick of this [expletive],” the woman said.
The other photographer appeared to tell the woman to lower her voice, as text at the top of the video read, “telling her keep it down bc couple is walking up.” The woman did not comply, responding, “No, don’t tell me to shh. You shh.” She then began walking away, then stopped and told them again to tear down the setup. “People can’t come here and picnic on the evening when they want to,” she added.
At this point, a mariachi band hired for the proposal began playing music as the photographers prepared their cameras. The woman then used profanity before escalating the situation by making racist remarks.
“It’s [expletive] Mexican. This isn’t Mexico either, you [expletive],” the woman said. The female photographer then told her, “say hi to TikTok.” She meant the video would be shared online and viewers would see her behavior. The woman then allegedly told them, “Go back to Mexico,” before walking away.
Despite the confrontation, the photographers headed to their spot as the couple arrived and walked toward the proposal setup. Thankfully, they captured the proposal as planned, and the moment wasn’t ultimately ruined.
As the video neared its end, the photographer added text that read, “Regardless congratulations to our young and proud Mexican couple.” In the caption, they also clarified, “Mind you engagements are not prohibited at this park and this proposal lasted less than 40 minutes.” It was unclear whether police eventually arrived at the park.
Viewers Slam California Woman Over Racist Behavior
Many viewers criticized the California woman for nearly disrupting the proposal and for allegedly using racist language. “‘People can’t enjoy the park’… sorry but if I were on a walk in a park and a mariachi band started playing I would instantly enjoy my walk more,” one person wrote.
More people criticized the woman and expressed relief that the proposal still happened in the end. “The mariachis were the cherry on top she was biggg mad,” one person wrote. Another viewer questioned the woman’s reaction, asking, “I’m so confused she’s mad that you’ve set up essentially the equivalent to a picnic because somebody might want to come in picnic there?”
The video prompted discussion about how disagreements over public-space use can escalate and disrupt important personal moments.
