‘Driving Is for Peasants’: Vivek Ramaswamy’s Billionaire Campaign Sparks Fresh Outrage After Latest 11-Minute Jet Flight

Ohio’s flyover candidate takes flight

Vivek Ramaswamy’s private-jet habit has already given Democrats an easy line of attack in the Ohio governor’s race. Now, an alleged 11-minute flight across the state is turning that attack into something close to self-parody.

The account Vivek Flight Tracker claimed Ramaswamy had flown from Findlay to Toledo, posting a map of the route alongside the message, “Vivek just took an 11 minute flight from Findlay to Toledo lmao.” The claim quickly landed in the r/Ohio discussion, where locals pointed out the same trip takes roughly 45 minutes by car. Reddit

One commenter asked, “Can’t even handle a short drive through Ohio?” Another landed on the political problem more precisely: “Man treats the state he wants to run like a flyover state.”

That would be useful opposition material under any circumstances. For Ramaswamy, it arrives after months of criticism over a campaign that has quite literally spent much of its time above the voters.

According to an Ohio Capital Journal investigation, campaign finance records showed Ramaswamy had spent nearly $690,000 leasing aircraft since launching his campaign. Federal flight records reviewed by the outlet also showed him using a private jet to reach multiple campaign events, including relatively short journeys within Ohio.

Even Republicans Are Telling Him To Park The Jet

The obvious response would be to stop giving opponents the photograph.

Apparently, that message has already come from inside Ramaswamy’s own party.

During a September campaign appearance captured in a C-SPAN transcript, a reporter told Ramaswamy he had spoken to Republicans, including party leaders, who were saying: “Just park the jet, man.”

Ramaswamy instead pivoted to Democratic opponent Amy Acton. “Amy Acton likes to talk a lot about my bank account,” he replied. “She doesn’t like to talk about helping yours.”

But Acton hardly needs to manufacture the contrast. Her campaign has deliberately emphasized her travel around Ohio in a Toledo-built 2018 Jeep Wrangler, turning the contest into an almost comically neat visual of Jeep versus jet. Her campaign has repeatedly accused Ramaswamy of treating Ohio like a “flyover state.” Acton’s campaign highlighted that contrast.

That is what makes the Findlay-to-Toledo episode politically damaging, assuming the tracker’s account of Ramaswamy’s travel is accurate. The flight itself is trivial. The message is not.

Campaigning for governor is supposed to involve seeing the state, meeting people, and understanding the places between major stops. Flying over those places instead, particularly after Republicans have reportedly told you to stop, turns a luxury into a symbol.

And for Ramaswamy, that symbol is becoming increasingly difficult to leave on the runway.
