A Georgia family is facing online backlash after sharing a video proudly showing off their connection to a “convict.” The family’s video followed a trend in which people reveal their relationship to a bride or groom at a wedding. Others have adapted the format for baby showers and gender reveal parties, with family members sharing how they are related to an unborn baby. The videos typically show relatives standing in a line, with each person stating their relationship before walking away from the camera to make room for the next person.
Rather than following the trend’s usual format, the Georgia family used it to reveal how each person was related to a “convict.” The video began with a boy saying, “I’m not the convict, I’m the convict’s little brother.”
The next boy introduced himself by saying, “I’m not the convict, I’m the convict’s aggravating brother.” Another family member followed with, “I’m not the convict, I’m the convict’s cousin.” More relatives continued sharing their connections to the man, including his sisters, aunt, brothers, cousins, and mother. Throughout the video, the family appeared to be enjoying themselves, laughing and smiling as they took turns participating in the trend.
At the end of the line, the “convict” himself appeared, holding the camera as he announced, “It’s me.” He then showed off stacks of money in his hands while filming his relatives before declaring, “I’m a free man.” He continued, “I’m free. I’m not the convict no more, man.” The video ended with him displaying the money once again.
Many viewers criticized the family for treating their relative’s criminal conviction as something to celebrate, arguing that the video made light of a serious matter. Although the relatives appeared cheerful as they shared their connections to the man, critics questioned why they seemed proud of his criminal history. Others took issue with the family laughing and smiling throughout the clip, arguing that a conviction should not be turned into a joke or a source of entertainment.
Viewers Slam Georgia Family Over Convict Video
Most viewers criticized the Georgia family for posting the video showing their relationship to a convict, arguing that it was inappropriate to share online. “We are so embarrassing,” one person wrote. Another commenter questioned the idea behind the clip, asking, “who idea was this…..”
Other viewers continued criticizing the family, with one person writing, “I’m not the convict, I’m embarrassed.” Another commenter joked, “I’m not the convict, I’m the convicts, correctional officer, and I’ll see him back in here in about two weeks.” Someone else questioned the family’s attitude toward the situation, adding, “Just celebrating anything atp.”
For many viewers, the issue was not simply the family’s participation in the trend but their decision to present the connection to a convict as a source of pride. Others questioned whether every family moment needs to be shared publicly, noting that some videos can attract criticism when posted online.
