Metallica’s James Hetfield Sparks Debate After Condemning Political Agendas at Las Vegas Concert: ‘Seeing Them Become Milquetoast is Disappointing’

Is staying neutral “metal” enough?

Metallica frontman James Hetfield has sparked a fierce political discourse after calling out entertainers who use their concerts to push political agendas, telling fans in Las Vegas, Nevada, that the legendary heavy metal band has no intention of influencing their beliefs. Hetfield’s wording, however, has drawn criticism, and some of his older fans also pointed out how their past songs were political.

During Metallica’s Oct. 10 performance at the Sphere in Las Vegas, the 63-year-old singer thanked fans for traveling to see the band before taking a swipe at unnamed performers who bring political messaging to the stage. “I just gotta say, Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you with their bulls[expletive], OK?” Hetfield told the crowd, drawing applause and cheers.

Metallica frontman James Hetfield recently called out artists who turn their concerts into political rallies, saying:

“Metallica is not here, like some other entertainers, to influence you with their BULLSH*T.”

He explained that Metallica’s goal was to give fans a break from the outside world, declaring, “Metallica’s agenda is love, energy, and heavy music, baby!” However, the remarks quickly drew mixed reactions online, with some fans praising Hetfield for keeping politics out of concerts while others accused the musician of abandoning the rebellious spirit that once defined the band.

One supporter on X applauded Hetfield for resisting what they called the “current thing mob,” describing his comments as an example of “true leadership.” Others were far less impressed. “I’m old enough to remember when Metallica very much wanted to influence ppl and express their beliefs. I loved them for that. Seeing them become milquetoast is disappointing,” one critic wrote.

Not Even An Anti-War Song?

The criticisms continued as another commenter mocked the apparent contradiction between avoiding political messaging and Metallica’s own history of social commentary, writing, “James Hetfield – people shouldn’t share their political view at concerts. Also James Hetfield – This next song is called …and justice for all.” One user called the band’s position “cowardice presenting itself as bravery,” arguing that Metallica should speak out on current issues rather than remain silent.

The controversy comes amid renewed debate over political statements at live shows following rapper Macklemore’s removal from the remaining dates of Ed Sheeran’s “Loop Tour.” Macklemore had called for a “Free Palestine” and performed his protest song “Hind’s Hall” during a tour appearance. Sheeran subsequently said the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the promoter and venues, not him.

Hetfield, meanwhile, has long opposed mixing politics with music. In a 2016 BBC interview, he explained that Metallica avoided politics and religion because such subjects could deepen divisions among fans. “I hate politics,” he said in a 2017 interview with Chilean newspaper La Tercera, adding that he wanted to connect people through music. Ironically enough, a fan noted that Metallica songs, namely “One,” “Disposable Heroes,” “Fight Fire with Fire,” “Blackened,” and more, were inherently political as they were anti-war.

Metallica’s 24-show “Life Burns Faster” residency at the Sphere began on Oct. 1 and is scheduled to run through March 13, 2027. The latest controversy suggests that even a band built on heavy riffs and rebellion cannot escape today’s increasingly polarized cultural debates.
