Transgender New Jersey actress Hunter Schafer faced harsh reactions online after revealing that she underwent bottom surgery.
Bottom surgery refers to gender-affirming procedures that alter a person’s genital anatomy to better align with their gender identity. For transgender women, this may include vaginoplasty, which creates a vagina, or other procedures involving the genital area. The specific surgery depends on each person’s needs and preferences, and not all transgender people choose to undergo it.
In an interview with Elle, Schafer revealed that she underwent bottom surgery in December of the previous year. “I just had bottom surgery in December, which was amazing, and I love it so much,” she said. She also explained that she had spent years embracing her gender-expansive identity and initially wanted to see whether she could feel comfortable in her previous body. “Like I said, for a long time I’ve embraced the gender-expansive part of myself, and I really wanted to try to make that previous body work, because I thought there was something really cool and badass about it.”
Schafer eventually decided that medically transitioning was the right choice for her. Her recovery from surgery required her to spend an extended period resting, which affected her daily step count. Despite the recovery process, the actress appeared happy with her decision.
Some people responded to Schafer’s announcement with transphobic comments, criticizing her decision to undergo bottom surgery and expressing hostility toward her identity as a transgender woman. Rather than respecting her personal choice, some commenters used the news to question or mock her transition. Their reactions reflected the prejudice transgender people can face when speaking publicly about their experiences and medical decisions, even when they express satisfaction with their choices.
Viewers Criticize New Jersey Actress Over Bottom Surgery
Many viewers responded to New Jersey actress Hunter Schafer’s announcement with transphobic comments, including deliberately misgendering her and questioning her decision to undergo bottom surgery. “Well sucks to be him because now there’s no going back and one day he will for sure regret this poor guy mentally ill and everyone around him lying and pushing this lie even further it’s sad really,” one person wrote. Another commenter dismissed her identity as a transgender woman, saying, “He’s still a man.”
Other commenters criticized Schafer’s decision to undergo surgery, with one person writing, “Absolutely barbaric. It’s crazy to my the medical community will perform this surgery.” However, several fans defended the actress and expressed happiness that she was satisfied with her decision. “As someone who had bottom surgery. She’s def a trooper if she was still working and doing press tours. I was in bed for months. Also post op depression is 100% a thing. Happy for her!” another person wrote, sharing their own experience with recovery after surgery.
The reactions highlighted the hostility LGBTQ+ actors can face online when they share personal decisions about their lives and bodies. Supporters also stressed that transgender people deserve respect for their medical choices and should not be subjected to harassment or misgendering for being open about their experiences.
