‘Newsom Laughing While Working From Home’: California Residents Angry After State Workers Launch Strike Over Return-to-Office Mandate

Has the strike affected you?

California state workers recently began a one-day strike for better pay, more flexibility to work remotely, and affordable healthcare. On social media, multiple California residents highlighted Governor Gavin Newsom as the main culprit behind the strike.

As reported by the Associated Press, the state workers who participated in the strike included nurses, auditors, counselors, office workers, and other public employees. They went on strike after the Newsom administration failed to “negotiate in good faith” with them after a previous contract expired.

Workers reportedly want a 20% pay increase, and return-to-office mandates are seen as a major point of contention. The governor argues that working in the office improves collaboration and innovation in public services. The union disagrees, claiming that remote work saves money on office space and improves the lives of workers. It also argues that returning to the office increases workers’ expenses.

Californians React to State Workers’ Strike

Residents on r/California largely supported the strike, with one of them saying: “In a day and age where we don’t have good public transit and the high cost of gas, I don’t know why you wouldn’t push to have remote work as much as possible.”

Many users blamed Newsom for the strike: “The problem is office occupancy is down across the board since the pandemic. Not really much of a problem actually; more like a non-issue that Newsom wants to correct for the landlords.”

What many considered to be his worst mistake was vetoing legislation that would secure the right to work from home: “The legislature passed a telework bill that would have required state departments to be more transparent on decisions for RTO, but Newsom vetoed it.”

One Californian wrote: “That was the last straw for me. I’ve been supportive of Newsom for years, but that was a deal-breaker.” Another person wrote: “Gavin Newsom laughing while working from home to ensure billionaire tax doesn’t pass.”

It’s still too early to estimate the possible impact of the one-day strike, but the dispute highlights the growing tensions between California state workers and the Newsom administration over pay, workplace flexibility, and the cost of returning to the office.
