Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna credited President Donald Trump with securing American Stephen Hubbard’s release from Russian custody. She defended Trump’s efforts to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine and criticized lawmakers opposing those discussions. However, her remarks drew backlash from critics questioning the timing of Hubbard’s release ahead of the midterm elections.
In a post shared on X, Luna linked Hubbard’s release to Trump’s ongoing peace negotiations. She accused some members of the Senate and House of opposing his discussions despite being “UNINFORMED” about the situation. “I wonder why? Who is donating to their campaigns?” she asked.
The congresswoman also questioned why lawmakers critical of Trump and Elon Musk would accept their assistance during the midterms. She suggested they should stop taking that support if they strongly opposed the two.
Closing her remarks, Luna issued a warning to those challenging the negotiations. “sometimes, if you don’t know what is actually happening, it is better to keep your mouth shut,” she wrote.
Florida Reacts
The responses on X raised questions about Russia’s handling of Hubbard’s detention, Trump’s negotiations, and lawmakers’ involvement in the process.
“Sounds like an election stunt to me,” one user wrote, questioning the timing of the release. Another asked, “Hey Anna. Who imprisoned Stephen Hubbard for 4 years?”
Others questioned what the development meant for Americans still in Russian custody. “What about the other prisoners they still have?” one response asked. A separate user challenged its diplomatic significance, questioning, “How does Stephen Hubbard’s release bring the Russia-Ukraine war closer to an end?”
Meanwhile, some responses focused on Luna’s concerns about lawmakers. “Senators have No authority to to be making deals with Ukraine,” one user argued. Another wrote, “the senate will take his money for the midterms and still vote against him and thats the part nobody wants to say out loud”
Luna’s post did not explain whether Hubbard’s release formed part of a broader agreement concerning the war in Ukraine.
