A proposed $10 billion data center in Michigan is causing quite a stir, with local residents making it clear they’re not exactly rolling out the welcome mat. The massive project, planned for the Holt area, has sparked concerns about its potential impact on the community. And with Delhi Township cutting ties with a development group involved in the proposal, the controversy is only heating up.
According to WKAR, the proposed $10 billion development would cover 423 acres near Holt, Michigan, and involves the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) and Lighthouse Sustainability. However, Delhi Township officials were reportedly caught off guard by the announcement, prompting the township to end its membership with LEAP. The decision has only added fuel to the fire, with residents questioning how much say they’ll have in a project of this size.
Notably, the controversy could soon reach a turning point. As reported by Michigan Public, Delhi Township trustees have scheduled a special meeting for Friday, October 30, to consider formally opposing data centers in the township. The proposed resolution also calls on LEAP and Lighthouse Sustainability to abandon their plans, citing overwhelming negative feedback from the community. With a temporary ban on new data center proposals already in place, it’s clear local officials aren’t taking the matter lightly.
Meanwhile, those behind the project insist they want residents to have their say before anything moves forward. Plans include several months of community discussions, along with a proposed $20 million fund intended to benefit the area. However, with opposition already mounting and local officials pushing back, winning over the community could prove easier said than done.
Michigan Residents Question Whether Their Voices Will Be Heard Over $10 Billion Data Center
Over on Reddit, Michigan residents aren’t holding back their frustrations. Reacting to the proposed community engagement process, one user sarcastically suggested the developers’ message was, “We are going to pretend to listen to you but whatever you say won’t matter.” Another questioned why politicians don’t understand when communities say no, while a third declared, “No data centers in our communities!!!”
Others were particularly frustrated by how the announcement was handled. “So nice of them to host a webinar on this development THE SAME DAY THE PRESS RELEASE COMES OUT!” one commenter remarked. Another raised environmental concerns, warning that the development “could very well harm the ecosystem of the Sycamore Creek Watershed.”
However, not everyone focused solely on expressing outrage. One Reddit user encouraged residents to attend public meetings and make their objections clear, arguing that “Environmental concerns work better than anti-AI sentiment.” With the township preparing to consider its next move, it’s clear the proposed development has already struck a nerve.
