New York Callback as Marvel’s New Rogue Turns Shane Gillis’ Joke Against Him on SNL: ‘I Put On My Little Wh*re Outfit and I Hit the Gym’

Three weeks later, his punchline walked back onstage wearing her.

Three weeks after Shane Gillis called gym women “wh*res” from the SNL stage, Marvel’s new Rogue walked onto the same stage, in her hosting debut, and got dressed in his punchline.

The New York moment came early in Saturday’s Halloween episode, per TheWrap, when Inde Navarrette used her first-ever Saturday Night Live monologue to detonate a three-week-old controversy in a single sentence.

🚨🇺🇸 Inde Navarrette claps back at Shane Gillis’s famous SNL gym joke during her own monologue tonight

The setup was her own career. Navarrette, capping a breakout year, was cast this summer as Rogue in Marvel Studios’ first X-Men film, and the monologue turned to the gym work the role demands. “I know it’s really important for Marvel that you get really fit, so I’ve been working out a lot,” she said. Then the knife, smiling: “Every morning, I put on my little whre outfit and I hit the gym.*”

The callback needed no footnote. On October 10, hosting SNL for the third time, Gillis had told the same room: “I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whres now.*” He leaned in: “You’ve seen the shorts?” And: “And don’t look!“

That joke spent three weeks compounding. Dan Levy posted an Instagram video denouncing it and the show for airing it: “Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whres,” the Schitt’s Creek creator said. “It makes the men calling them whres misogynists.” Even SNL’s UK edition piled on.

Navarrette’s answer did what none of the criticism could: it put the joke back in the building that aired it, rewired to point the other way. The room laughed. The internet did something more complicated.

The history underneath: SNL fired Gillis from its cast in 2019 over resurfaced remarks, then brought him back as a three-time host. Gillis has not responded. His own October episode already carried chaos of a different kind; he broke character and doubled over after an accidental live expletive in a Green Eggs and Ham sketch. Her episode had Tom Hanks returning as David S. Pumpkins, and still her nine words were the headline.

The Audience Split Down the Middle

It did split, but not evenly: in the replies under the clip, the skeptics showed up loudest, and their weapon was deflation, not outrage. “is the clapback in the room with us,” asked one. The deadpan corner mock-mourned the victim: “I wonder how many giant arenas he’s going to sell out to recover from this.” Her defenders held the comedy-law line: “If Shane can give it, he should be able to take it back. That’s legit the rules of comedy.” And the peace corner refused the war entirely: “Love both. I look forward to seeing her comic ability.” One side sees a rookie outboxing a veteran with his own glove. The other saw a morning outfit report. Both sides quote the same nine words.
