Heads up, street rats everywhere – Aladdin is back and in live-action. The teaser trailer has been released and it’s filled with heartwarming nostalgia.

Several elements stick out here. Most notable is the Cave of Wonders. The design has barely changed from the original 1992 animated Aladdin and it still looks as iconic and ominous as ever.
Then, of course, we see a glimpse of Aladdin himself, played by Egyptian actor Mena Massoud. The trailer smartly cuts off just as the Arabian orphan comes across the resting place of the magic lamp. This is where Will Smith’s Genie rests – at least until Aladdin releases him from years of dormancy.
The other teases of Jafar’s henchman and Iago are also mouth-watering. The production values are impressive enough and the visuals are true to the original so to see how Jafar looks in glorious live-action will be interesting. Aladdin’sย sorcerous antagonist is played by Marwan Kenzari, who has previously been seen in Collide and the 2016 remake of Ben-Hur.
Joining Massoud, Kenzari and Smith is Power Rangers‘ Naomi Scott, playing Princess Jasmine. Navid Negahban plays the Sultan and Numan Acar plays Jafar’s right-hand man, Hakim. Other members of the cast include Nasim Pedrad and Billy Magnussen, who will play original characters, Dalia and Prince Andors, respectively.
Aladdin is directed by Guy Ritchie and produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich – who have recently been linked to a Lilo & Stitch remake.
Regarding the role of Princess Jasmine, Naomi Scott has said that the character “will be strong and have fun, but also get it wrong and be emotional. She’s a multidimensional woman, and she doesn’t have to just be one thing. So in this movie, you see her go on such a roller coaster, as opposed to her one goal being to fall in love or get married.”
The movie is set for release in the United States on May 24, 2019. Other territories are sure to receive the film around that time or soon afterwards.
