‘Are We Trying to Do Nothing?’: Massachusetts Residents Criticise Local Officials Over Controversial Zoning Plan

Golf courses make terrible housing developments

Marblehead Local government officials recently approved a highly controversial multifamily housing zoning plan. The Massachusetts town strategically placed the new housing district directly over a historic golf course. This specific action allows the community to technically avoid building any new residential homes.

On its third attempt tonight, Marblehead Town Meeting approved an “MBTA Communities–compliant” district largely centered on the 125-year-old Tedesco Country Club, meeting 3A requirements on paper while all but assuring no new housing would be built.

Mass.gov records indicate the MBTA Communities Act mandates transit-connected cities to allow denser neighborhoods. Boston.com reported that local voters previously defeated genuine compliance efforts multiple times. A Boston.com article noted the state attorney general threatened severe penalties regarding these earlier rejections.

Boston.com stated the resulting regulatory map primarily covers the Tedesco Country Club property. Marblehead Community Access and Media captured a resident named David publicly highlighting the housing impossibility. Boston.com confirmed the social media platform X hosted a viral clip of this blunt exchange.

Massachusetts Residents Demand Authentic Housing Solutions

On the r/boston forum, online critics quickly launched intense attacks against the coastal community. Evaluating the controversial golf course loophole, one Reddit user bluntly declared,“Everyone knows this is a farce”.

Many people expressed deep exhaustion regarding residents actively blocking affordable state housing initiatives. Condemning these restrictive local attitudes, another online commenter argued, “This NMBYISM is killing the state”.

Several individuals completely rejected the municipality due to the controversial local housing vote. Highlighting this intense regional hostility, one vocal critic demanded observers recognize “these towns are being selfish pricks”.

However, some measured observers directed their public frustration away from the local government administrators. Defending the municipal workers, one person admitted, “Yeah I wouldn’t blame the administrator here”.

These forum participants reminded the public about previous failed municipal votes regarding housing legislation. Another user noted the town“tried to pass other plans for 3A but the townspeople keep voting them down”.

Massachusetts residents remain deeply frustrated by municipal attempts to bypass urgent state housing mandates. Voters overwhelmingly demand genuine legislative efforts to solve the ongoing regional housing crisis.
