Recently, the official website for the Mob Psycho 100 anime began streaming a promo video for the second season. And the brief teaser promises fans more of what they’ve come to expect from the series.
The first half of the video highlights one of the things that makes Mob Psycho 100 such a hit with its audience. At its core, the series is sort of a slice-of-life with insane psychic battles thrown in. The video makes this clear by emphasizing those slice-of-life elements. The title character goes out for the student council. He continues to struggle with his social anxieties. Oh, and there’s plenty of time for him to pine over a pretty girl.
Of course, the series wouldn’t have earned the reputation it has without the psychic elements. And those come out in full force for the second half of the teaser. But one of the things the series does incredibly well is use the psychic battles to essentially enhance the meaning of his personal struggles. On paper, Mob is the definition of an overpowered protagonist. This is something many viewers of media take issue with. But ONE, the creator of Mob Psycho 100, uses this aspect of Mob’s character to accentuate the title character’s everyday struggles. It humanizes the character a great deal and endears him to viewers. This isn’t the only time, either, as ONE is also the creator of fan-favorite One-Punch Man. The latter example tells a different story, but through very similar means and also has a second season coming.
The announcement for the second season of Mob Psycho 100 dropped in March, during the Mob Psycho 100 Reigen: Shirarezaru Kiseki Reinōryokusha event. Studio Bones, well known for things like Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, and the wildly popular My Hero Academia, handled the first season. And, apparently, none of the staff is changing. Bones produced some of the most beloved anime of the past several years, so Mob Psycho 100 is very much in good hands. The second season premieres in 2019, as does the second season of One-Punch Man. In the meantime, the first season is available on Crunchyroll and just came to Toonami’s programming block.
