Heads up, zombie fans – The Walking Dead Season 10 has officially been announced.
This not-so-surprising news came in the form of a post on The Walking Dead AMC Twitter page. The short clip shows creepy-looking zombies loitering around in their usual undead style as the words S10 October form on-screen.
The announcement arrives a week before the Season 9 midseason premiere. From this point onwards, the show will build on the comic book villains ‘The Whisperers’. These creepy villains, who wear the skins of walkers to blend in with the herd, were introduced in this season’s midseason finale.
If you’re not shocked by the renewal, it’s understandable. After all, executive producer Josh Sapan has claimed that AMC plan to continue The Walking Dead franchise “over the next decade-plus” with various TV movies and new TV shows. Heck, executive producer David Alpert claimed to know what’s happening in Season 12 of the ‘main’ show.
“I happen to love working from source material, specifically because we have a pretty good idea of what season 10 is gonna be,” IndieWire reported, “We know where season 11 and 12…we have benchmarks and milestones for those seasons if we’re lucky enough to get there.”
The creator of the source material isn’t done either. The Walking Dead comics will go on for at 300 issues at least. At the time of writing, the series has passed just 187 issues. Creator Robert Kirkman said in a Reddit AMA:
I do plan on doing at least 300 issues, but if I’m having this much fun, then I won’t stop there. Also, if I suddenly start having a lot less fun, I may end it earlier, but I don’t see that happening. I’m in for the long haul, and Charlie Adlard [comic artist] is too.
In other words, The Walking Dead is like our very own Galactic Empire. As long as the creators are having fun with it (and, dare it to be said, as long as it remains a reliable cash cow), it will continue.
