A South Korean man in Arkansas is drawing some attention online after allegedly losing his job because his boss believed he was a “North Korean Spy.” It had been a month after he started working in IT when he was asked about his immigration status. “After he realized I’m not a citizen, he IMMEDIATELY asked me how I feel about Kim Jung Un,” the man recalled. Shortly after, he was terminated, and many online users believe this was blatant discrimination.
The ex-employee, who goes by the username Ok-Introduction-194, posted his termination story on r/it. In response to being asked about Kim Jung Un, he said he replied, saying that “Kim’s a fat pig.”
Unfortunately, that apparently wasn’t enough for the employer after Ok-Introduction-194 lost access to his company’s account, never to get it back again. However, it doesn’t seem like he’s too bothered by this job loss: “I didn’t take it that seriously,” as he said in a comment.
Online Users Believe The Worker’s Boss Was Guilty of Discrimination
Many Redditors in the comment section were more than sure that the boss was not in the right for assuming their new IT worker was a North Korean spy. “The confidence in which some people fill in gaps of information is just insane,” remarked a user. “Get a lawyer, wrongful termination, and discrimination,” bluntly put another.
One person suggested that the employer might have been simply looking for a valid reason to fire their new IT worker, and accusing him of being a spy would be the best reason. On the other hand, Ok-Introduction-194 mentioned that he didn’t even apply for this job; “they came to me,” he wrote.
Another commenter asked how he was hired without I-9 verification, to which OP responded, “I was under W-9. I still provided my SSN.” Though, his immigration status was just the topic that eventually led to his alleged termination, it wasn’t the only reason, based on his story.
Ok-Introduction-194 said his boss claimed a “security breach” had happened shortly after cutting off his account access before finally letting him go. Several hundred Redditors found this all a bit too suspicious, with one sarcastically commenting, “Seems like something a Korean spy would post.”
In the end, despite losing his job, the ex-employee said he wishes anyone who sees his story gets a “chuckle” out of it all.
