Ahoy me mateys! The next Dungeons and Dragons book will put players on the seas by revisiting a classic module from the 80s.

Wizards of The Coast officially announced the new fifth edition book. A day before the announcement, Amazon leaked Ghosts of Saltmarsh by posting a picture of the book and details of the upcoming Dungeons and Dragons setting.

Dungeons and Dragons

“This adventure book combines some of the most popular classic adventures from the first edition of Dungeons & Dragons including the classic โ€œUโ€ series, plus some of the best nautical adventures from the history of Dungeon Magazine: Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, Danger at Dunwater, Salvage Operation, Isle of the Abbey, The Final Enemy, Tammerautโ€™s Fate, The Styes.โ€

The Dungeons and Dragons team is taking players back to the first edition of the game by dropping them off in the town of Saltmarsh.

“…a sleepy fishing village that sits on the precipice of destruction. Smugglers guide their ships to hidden coves, willing to slit the throat of anyone fool enough to cross their path. Cruel sahuagin gather beneath the waves, plotting to sweep away coastal cities. Drowned sailors stir to unnatural life, animated by dark magic and sent forth in search of revenge. The cult of a forbidden god extends its reach outward from a decaying port, hungry for fresh victims and willing recruits. While Saltmarsh slumbers, the evils that seek to plunder it grow stronger. Heroes must arise to keep the sea lanes safe for all.”

This will be the first 5E book released in 2019. In January, we got a bit of unofficial information from Sr. Director of Dungeons and Dragonsย Nathan Stewart and Game Designer Kate Welch an episode of Spoilers and Swag. Ghosts of Saltmarsh will include new adventure hooks for characters level one through 12. It will also introduce mechanics to ship battles, new magic items, and monsters.

โ€œThe Saltmarsh series consistently ranks as one of the most popular classic D&D adventures,โ€ said Mike Mearls, franchise creative director of D&D. โ€œWith its ties to ocean-based adventuring, it was an obvious step to augment it with additional sea-based adventures and a robust set of rules for managing a nautical campaign.โ€
