Just days after Shazam hit theaters, it appears that DC has a sequel in the works for the next installment of Billy Batson’s story.

According to The Wrap, Shazam screenwriter Henry Gayden is returning to write the screenplay for the sequel. The site also states that director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran are also expected to return for the upcoming sequel as well.

With Shazam having success both critically and at the box-office, it’s a no brainer for DC to capitalize and get right to work on a sequel. Critics and fans alike have praised the movie for its family-oriented story and hilarious dialogue. With Henry Gayden, David F. Sandberg, and Peter Safran all reportedly returning, fans should be optimistic on the future of the Shazam franchise.

There won’t be any spoilers here but the original film set up quite a few possibilities for a potential sequel. It’ll be exciting to see where DC goes with the formerly known Captain Marvel going forward.

We here at The Nerd Stash gave Shazam 4 out of 5 stars, earning a “Great” rating. Here’s what we had to say about the movie overall:

“Almost everything in this movie works from its comedy to its emotional moments to the exceptional cast. Chuck fans can rejoice as Zachary Levi finally gets his due with a starring role that he was born to play. Although the movie stumbles a bit due to a weak villain and cheesy side-antagonists, Shazam is (hopefully) a hit in the making. Most importantly, this is a fun movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Slowly but surely, DC is continuing to trend in the right direction.”

Shazam made $151 million worldwide over the weekend and you can check it out in theaters now.
