Have you ever wanted to be a Samurai? How about a Samurai in a cyberpunk world fighting endless waves of Yakuza? If the answer is yes (And we all know the answer was yes), then you should definitely check out Akane. The top-down arcade slasher from developer QubicGames that is now available on the Nintendo Switch. And it’s only $4.99, I spent more than that on a very unsatisfying lunch today. But enough out of me, check out this awesome trailer below:

That was awesome right? I agreed. Those cyberpunk aesthetics get me every time. And the design of the main character while lowkey is definitely awesome. She seems like someone you really wouldn’t want to meet on a bad day. By the way, if you already own one of QubicGames’ other titles, you can get Akane for 50% off.

Anyway, some details about the game. If you can’t tell from the trailer it’s based on a one-hit-one-kill mechanic. So basically you cut down as many enemies as possible before someone gets lucky and ruins your day. This is true twitchy arcade glory right here.

Let’s see what else do we have…five enemy types, Yakuza guy, Tank, Shooter, Cyber Ninja, and The Boss. Should provide plenty of diversity. Akane also features an equipment system with different guns and katanas, so we have some more variety.

Here’s something really interesting. The game features different equipable cigarettes that change the aesthetic appearance of your special skills. The idea that cigarettes would be equipment in a game on a Nintendo system would have surprised me just a few years ago. The Switch really is a bastion for unique and awesome games.

So that’s Akane. I’d be all over this game if I owned a Switch…but I don’t. Those of you that do should check it out. Cyberpunk arcade slasher action for less than the price of a good beer? Extremely hard to argue against that.
