A bewildering sight played out in a restaurant in Missouri when a manager interrupted a birthday celebration, blowing out the celebrant’s birthday candles abruptly. In a TikTok video, the restaurant was identified as 360 Bar, Downtown, Saint Louis. In the clip, a group of women could be heard singing “Happy Birthday,” happily, with the cake on the table. Just towards the end of the song, the manager came out of nowhere, leaned over, and blew out the candles. The guests were astonished, turning to the manager, who walked away with no explanation. Their surprise was written clearly on their faces.
In the caption, the TikToker explained that a family member had gone to the restaurant to celebrate a birthday, bringing the cake all the way from Chicago. However, after the manager’s actions, they could not eat it. The user stated that they had visited the same restaurant to celebrate their birthday earlier in the year and faced no issues like that. In fact, they noted that the staff encouraged them and even gave them a lighter for their candles. Questioning the inconsistency in staff behavior, the person attributed it to Asian hate, noting that the group was made up of all Asian guests.
In an update later posted in comments, it was confirmed that the Missouri restaurant had no rules about open fires, and a server actually gave the group the lighter. After the clip had gone viral, the VP of the restaurant reached out to the birthday celebrant to offer her a refund of the bill and informed her that the staff member who blew out the candles had been fired.
Internet Expresses Frustration At The Manager’s Unprofessional Actions
Many TikTokers attributed the incident to a lack of basic hospitality and customer service. Some even highlighted the sanitary implications of the manager’s actions.
One user criticized the entire establishment, “This restaurant could have handled this in a much more professional & decent way…” Reflecting on their growth, someone said, “I’m glad I’m working on my temper because, baby, no.” One user highlighted the bad timing, writing, “Mind you, they waited until the song was almost over to do or say anything, and they simply could’ve said candles aren’t allowed, if that even was the issue.” Another added, “The birthday song was almost done, which means the candles would’ve been blown out in mere seconds by the birthday girl! Jesus Christ.” Someone confessed, “The way I would lose my mind if this happened…” A TikToker described the manager’s actions as “extremely unprofessional” and “very over the line” while another noted, “That’s so icky. I wouldn’t even want the cake anymore…“
The unified response to the manager’s actions highlights the need for service staff to respect customers’ rights. Luckily, the Missouri restaurant’s management swung into action quickly to avoid further damage to its reputation.
