The previews for Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate are out, and after thoroughly looking at all of them, I think it feels familiar to one game: Metroid Prime. Before you write me off as being crazy or talking, hear me out. Destiny 2 is revamping many of its systems, and while that is another topic, the exploration part caught my attention from the recent previews. Many have already said this might be the biggest expansion yet, but beyond that, it seems Kepler will give a lot of old-school gamers Metroid Prime vibes, and if that’s the case, I can’t wait to jump in.
Destiny 2: The Edge Of Fate Is Improving Exploration, Too

Combat has always been one, if not the biggest, focus of Destiny 2. Despite the many things that surround the game at times, good or bad, combat is amazing. And I mean, it is Bungie spearheading D2. We already know the quality is there. However, in past expansions, the exploration and puzzle-solving aspect has been key, too. Taking the ARG and community puzzles aside, the hands-on moments in the game are terrific and make way for a lot of secret-hunting shenanigans. However, The Edge of Fate might elevate this aspect even further.
Kepler is the main place we will visit in Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, and after looking at the previews and reactions to it, we see that it has some strong Metroid Prime vibes. In what way? The exploration aspect. As you know, one of the most beloved things from Metroid Prime is how everything feels like a puzzle before feeling like a hectic FPS. Not many series manage to provide this, and a few prefer the latter for some fast-paced combat that leaves the brain-teasers on the side. Yet, The Edge of Fate might be placing exploration at the same level as its combat, and I love that.
According to recent previews, Kepler can feel like a maze. It might not be the biggest map (or at least not yet), but it has a lot of depth and verticality, with many environmental puzzles for players to solve. Now, Destiny 2 isn’t a stranger to puzzles and challenges for Guardians to tackle, but it is great that it will be such a prominent aspect when the expansion launches.
This Might Be The Most Cohesive Expansion Yet

Looking back at The Final Shape, I loved everything in it, but the exploration aspect felt more like an extra. It wasn’t bad or underused, but everything was so combat-oriented and with good reason. The new classes were terrific, and the enemies were quite challenging. Yet, as I explored the more open areas, I never felt that urge to actually look under every stone or search every nook and cranny. But from what we’ve seen in Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, all systems will feel more cohesive this time around.
Still, we’re a few weeks away from jumping into this expansion, so the final verdict isn’t out yet. But based on the previews, it is safe to say that this will be an expansion that won’t only eclipse all previous ones but also raise the bar for this new Destiny 2 saga. Also, this is me just gushing about the exploration, but everything else coming to The Edge of Fate, including the armor changes, more streamlined stats, and a much better onboarding, will make this one expansion that will go down in the history books as one of the best and most approachable.
