Police force K9s are an essential part of many police tasks. K9s are dogs with special training that help to protect and detect dangerous objects such as drugs, explosives, and even people. That is why, between handlers and police dogs, there must be a relationship of trust to overcome dangerous situations when working as a team. This is why humans and K9s often have a powerful bond. As you can see in this video on Reddit, an entire police department in Virginia salutes one of their veteran K9s while she performs her walkout after she got cancer—a sorrowful farewell.

Redditor yanakozlova shared this solemn yet sad video on r/nextfuckinglevel. The video shows 11-year-old German Shepherd Candy walking with her handler. The police officer and the K9 dog make her walk out through the Virginia Beach Correctional Center while the other officers salute the veteran, who had to retire after being diagnosed with cancer. On their way to where Candy could finally rest, she was accompanied by some civilians, including her handler’s family members.

Many users in the comments felt equally affected and saddened by the video, almost to the extent of the canine police colleagues. Some even shared that they were bawling their eyes out because of Candy’s departure.

I wasn’t crying seeing the ball. You were crying! And who is cutting onions in here?!

This video actually took place in 2023, when Candy had to receive her retirement early. Usually, K9s serve between six and eight years before retiring. However, Candy had already completed 10 years of service in this department after being the first K9 to join. Everyone will remember her hard work, even though it will always be difficult, even for police officers, to have to “put their four-legged comrades to rest.” It is heartbreaking that our furry friends have a shorter lifespan than humans, and saying goodbye will be very hard every time.
