While some networks tend to change it up around this time of year, others often reward success. This time around, ABC is one of the networks rewarding success. According to reports from Deadline, ABC is set to renew both The Rookie and The Good Doctor for another season of television. This renewal provides the cop drama The Rookie with a fifth season and the medical drama The Good Doctor with a sixth.
ABC Renews The Rookie and The Good Doctor
The Rookie comes from creator and executive producer Alexi Hawley. It stars Nathan Fillion, Mekia Cox, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter, and more. The series follows Fillion’s character, Officer John Nolan, as well as other cops in his precinct as they fight crime and learn how to be the best officers of the law and people that they can be.
A renewal for The Rookie speaks to the success of the series. However, another season is not necessarily surprising. Just a few weeks ago, ABC announced an FBI-focused spinoff series of The Rookie. This series is set to star Niecy Nash and will reportedly crossover with The Rookie frequently.
The Good Doctor hails from showrunner and executive producer David Shore. It stars Freddie Highmore, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, Christina Chang, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, Paige Spara, Noah Galvin, Bria Samone, and more. The series primarily follows Highmore’s character, Dr. Shaun Murphy, a brilliant surgeon living with autism spectrum disorder. Throughout the series, Dr. Murphy navigates medical mysteries as well as real world drama.
The Good Doctor and The Rookie are not the only series being renewed by ABC. Earlier this month, the network also announced a renewal for the hit comedy series Abbott Elementary. With three of its major TV shows coming back for further seasons, much of ABC’s current slate of programming will be unchanged for this Fall.
