In the world of MMOs, we’ve gotten used to having different combat styles that cater to different types of players. There are certain games that prefer a more hands-on approach with a lot of inputs by the second, while others prefer classical yet more strategic gameplay. Fortunately, Throne and Liberty combines these aspects perfectly and even allows players to pick between its Action and Classic modes. But is there really a winner between the two of them?
Classic Mode
Let’s start with the classic MMO, which many might feel familiar with in Throne and Liberty in contrast to the Action Mode. This one is also known as “Tab-targeting,” which is the one that you’ll find in World of Warcraft or FFXIV. As someone who’s played MMOs for years, I’ve always preferred this one. Also, my brain always goes for the Tab key to target enemies, so that’s that. Yet, there are a few downsides to it. First, it is quite challenging to use well in PvP content. Since you might want to be more precise when aiming at certain foes, spamming your Tab key might be too tedious. Second, controlling your camera is a bit more difficult, so to speak. You must keep your right mouse button pressed to control it, which might not be everyone’s cup of tea.
Action Mode
On the other hand, we have Action Mode, which might be the preferred one for Throne and Liberty players, especially if they are not used to Tab-targeting or the classic mode. Here, you’ll get a crosshair and be able to move your camera freely. This is the ideal mode for PvP, which requires more finesse and careful inputs. However, if you’re moving your camera too much during PvE content, chances are you might aggro an enemy by mistake if you point your crosshair in another direction. Still, many might opt for this given the large-scale content Throne and Liberty has.
Which Mode is the Best?
Since everyone is free to choose their favorite, allow me to tell you about my experience. I always go for Classic Mode for PvE situations. I find it easier to focus on an enemy, and swapping between foes is faster and more precise. However, PvP scenarios benefit more from Action Mode. Since things get hectic, it is better to have more control over where you look and which enemy you’re targeting, which is why I like Action over Classic in player-versus-player.
Ultimately, it’s up to you to pick the one you like the most, but if you’re not convinced, you can swap them at the press of a button. Also, the combat remains the same, and your character will still auto-attack and wait for your input to activate skills. The big difference relies on whether you want to move your camera freely when fighting or a more static experience.
