A new front runner is rumored for Captain Marvel, as reported by Heroic Hollywood.
The website states that Rebecca Ferguson is the new front runner for Marvel’s major female superhero standalone movie. Ferguson, who may be most well-known for the title role in the BBC miniseries The White Queen, can be most recently seen in Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation.
This marks the third actress reportedly in talks to play Captain Marvel, as Emily Blunt and Charlize Theron are the other two actresses who are rumored to be heavily considered by Marvel. There have been others rumored, such as Jessica Chastain and Katee Sackhoff, but these have been rumors driven by fan castings.
Chastain was in talks with Marvel about a different role a few years before, but it was for a different role. However, Disney does like to often go back to the same wheelhouse of actors and actresses, as it seemingly helps with their crazy production schedule. Chastain, as you can see in the article linked above, has also expressed an interest in headlining one of Marvel’s major superhero franchises.
Blunt was the first big name to be in rumored to be in unofficial talks with Marvel to play Captain Marvel. However, this proved to be fancasting, as Blunt talked to MTV News and said she hadn’t received any phone calls or communication from Marvel in regards to the role. However, this has proven to be a particularly strong bit of fan casting, and, since Marvel really does listen to their fans, don’t discount her as a strong contender for the role.
Theron was the second substantial name to be tied to the role in recent years. However, to seemingly discredit her chances, her name came up as also being attached to a Captain Marvel film with Angelina Jolie directing. It has been rumored that Marvel is seriously looking at Angelina Jolie for the director’s chair, so this does lend some credence to the rumor.
While Blunt and Chastain have simply been mentioned as popular pieces of fan casting, they also look very good, in terms of their acting resumes and how fans have imagined the actresses in costume. Katheryn Winnick from Vikings, has also expressed interest in playing the part, and has some pretty convincing fan art that really looks like a modern Captain Marvel.
Out of all the rumored actresses for the role, I think Blunt would be the best fit. Marvel needs someone to market and promote the hell out of this movie, since female led action films are still a box office gamble, at least stateside. Since Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter does not have to approve Kevin Feige’s creative decisions anymore, I think it is very likely Feige will be able to spend a significant amount of money on this movie. Marvel films, with the exception of The Avengers, try to only spend a reasonable amount of money, which usually means scaling back on costs regarding actors and directors. Captain Marvel is going to be a hard concept to sell, and they’ll need to really spare no expense in advertising in order to warm audiences up to the character.
Chastain and Theron both still sound like a long shots, as the actresses has always seemingly geared toward prestige roles. I don’t think Winnick is as well known as her fans want her to be. While she would be much cheaper than all of the other actresses listed, I don’t see Marvel sparing any expense in regards to this film, as it is slated for a November release, a time where strong marketing and a great film can dominate the box office for many weeks.
Finally, my personal favorite would have to be Blunt. I think she looks great in Sicario, and that film shows the actresses displaying a range involving a by-the-book cop fighting against a war that is virtually unwinnable. That would be similar to Captain Marvel, as she is very similar to Captain America. It would be easier for casual fans of the MCU and comics to understand the character as well, if there were some similarities to an already established character.
