While you would expect expensive jewelry to be displayed inside a locked glass case, how about canned processed meat? If you thought that’s absurd, you’re not alone; a woman shopper at the Dimond Walmart in Anchorage, Alaska, thought the exact same thing. “I thought I’d be able to put the spam in my cart, no go 😬,” she said in her TikTok post, showing how she had to bizarrely call an associate to purchase canned meats like Spam or Corned Beef.
In an almost dystopian manner, the Alaskan Walmart shopper had to press a button to call one of the store’s employees to unlock the Spam’s display case. A sticker showing that security cameras were in use was also pasted on the glass to dissuade anyone from even attempting to secretly retrieve the canned meats on their own. In the video, the summoned associate tells OP she can also buy Spam from Register 6, where she would likely not need to deal with the canned meat products in a locked case. Still, the fact that Walmart did this is very odd, and no viewer was on board with the concept.
“Nah I’m walking out of any store that does that,” reads one of the top comments on the Alaskan woman’s post. “Tinned meats under lock down?! We’re locking down war rations now? This is rock bottom,” complains another. “It’s bad enough it’s locked up but they bringing it to the front like it’s a $4000 laptop lol,” quips a third. One TikTok user poked fun at how the processed meat at Walmart had better security measures than the war plans leaking in the recent Signal debacle. “Spam locked up better than attack war plans with the US government.”
A Redditor reacting to the post about locked Spam at Walmart spoke about how they also had a similar experience with razors in a glass case. “I thought I was part of a Monty Python skit,” they recalled, speaking about the ridiculousness of it all. Several other users attempt to explain why Walmart would do such a thing to processed meats. Regardless of the reason, having to call someone to unlock a spam case is still outrageous. After all, locking a less valuable grocery item in a case and forcing customers to interact with workers to buy it will surely have a negative effect on the item’s sales.
