Things keep getting worse for Alec Baldwin as the star, who’s already facing an involuntary manslaughter charge and a potential five-year prison sentence after the death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, is now also staring down a negligence lawsuit from Hutchins’ parents. The cinematographer’s parents have leveled a lawsuit against Baldwin, the Rust producers, and the assistant director, which was all somehow involved in Halyna Hutchins’ death in 2021.
Having been deeply involved with Halyna Hutchins’ death since the cinematographer was shot on the set of Rust in what some call a prop-related accident, Alec Baldwin and Rust‘s armorer Hannah Guiterrez Reed were officially charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter on February 1st. Rust assistant director David Halls was also charged with negligent use of a deadly weapon, according to CNN, but pleaded ‘no contest’ where Baldwin and Reed have maintained their innocence. The trio has been scheduled for a court date on February 24th, but in the meantime, Halyna Hutchins’ Ukranian-based parents and sisters have begun their own quest for justice against Baldwin in the form of a lawsuit, suing him for intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligence, according to BBC News.
Quoting the defendants, attorney Gloria Allred gave the following statement this morning:
“We have filed a lawsuit today in Los Angeles Superior Court against Alec Baldwin, Rust producers, armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, first assistant director David Halls, and other defendants who may have been responsible for the death of Halyna Hutchins…Anyone who is responsible for her loss must be held accountable.”
‘Rust’ Star Alec Baldwin Faces Second Lawsuit from Hutchins Family
This is not the first time Halyna Hutchins’ family has brought charges against Alec Baldwin, however – her husband and son brought a wrongful death lawsuit against the crew of Rust in October of last year, only to reach a settlement on October 22nd, in which Halyna’s husband Matthew was named executive producer of a Rust remake, according to Deadline. When asked the reasoning behind the family’s second lawsuit being filed now, Allred stated that the first suit had been for Halyna Hutchins’s husband and son, while “we are now representing others in the family, Mom, Dad, and sister, and there has been no settlement for them.”
Gloria Allred has also claimed that there has not been an apology from Alec Baldwin since the shooting or the settlement of the initial lawsuit and that the second lawsuit is motivated by a need for “justice and accountability” for Baldwin, Reed, and Halls. It is currently unclear how the new lawsuit will affect the charges brought against Baldwin in his initial trial later this month, but a spokesperson from the DA’s office in Santa Fe, where the shooting took place, has assured Deadline that “The District Attorney and special prosecutor are actively reviewing all applicable laws to ensure they have the strongest case to secure justice for Halyna Hutchins.”
For their part, Baldwin and his legal team have labeled the charges brought against the A-lister as “a terrible miscarriage of justice,” though no comment has been put forth specifically about the new lawsuit leveled by Halyna Hutchins’ family.
