Alec Baldwin has reached a settlement with the family of Halyna Hutchins after the shooting accident on the set of the western film Rust, and filming continues in January 2023. Matthew Hutchins, husband of the late Halyna Hutchins, will produce the western film. Alec Baldwin fired the weapon that killed Halyna and injured director Joel Souza on the western film set, which was fired in October of 2021. The wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Alec Baldwin, the film’s production companies, and its producers. Matthew Hutchins’ attorney stated:
“We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC.”
Matthew Hutchins will be an executive producer when filming continues on Rust. The widower expressed his frustration towards Baldwin when he did the ABC News interview surrounding the incident.
The Death of Halyna Hutchins Sheds Light on Gray Area of Firearms on Film Sets
The wrongful death lawsuit claimed production “cut corners” and “chose to hire the cheapest crew available.” It also alleged that the production “knowingly hired a wholly unqualified armorer.” The armorer is responsible for the weapons safety on set. Depending on the judge’s ruling on the settlement, it would discontinue the wrongful death lawsuit. Now Matthew Hutchins will oversee the filming of Rust once production continues next year. The western film had Alec Baldwin starring in and producing it. Halyna Hutchins was the victim of the carelessness of the production team. With Matthew Hutchins involved, he fixed safety issues that Alec Baldwin and the rest of the crew didn’t do in the western film. The tragic death will always be attached to Rust, especially when filming continues. The specific details of the wrongful death lawsuit haven’t been made public. At least the Hutchins family has gotten some form of justice.
The settlement will sadly not bring back Halyna Hutchins, but she is an example of what not to do when using weapons on set.
