Starfield offers no shortage of companions and crew members to take along with you on the trip of a lifetime as you explore the game’s procedurally generated planets. Companion characters have become common in Bethesda’s epic and sprawling RPGs, but Starfield offers the most diverse and interesting bunch yet. As it currently stands, seven companions have been revealed, but the game will offer a total of twenty. In the meantime, here are the Starfield companions that have been revealed so far.

One key thing to note is the distinction between companions and crew members. Companions can be considered pivotal to the game, and each has a role to play in the overarching narrative. On top of that, they also have their own dedicated companion quests, substantial interactions with the protagonist, and are romanceable.

In an interview with Kinda Funny, Director Todd Howard confirmed that the four members of the space exploration group, Constellation, are the only companions with unique questlines. Crew members, on the other hand, can be encountered and recruited as you explore the galaxy. The primary function of crew members is to enhance your ship and outposts with their unique skills. You can still take them on the go with you, but these crew members don’t come with any unique questlines.

Starfield Companion: Sarah Morgan

Sarah Morgan is a companion with a previous history of serving in the United Colonies military and has an unending taste for adventure. Her primary role is acting chair of Constellation, and looks set to be a major player in the game’s story. Sarah is a formidable ally to bring along with you as she boasts impressive stats in both aerodynamics and lasers.

Skills: Astrodynamics (4), Lasers (3), Leadership (2), Botany (1)

Starfield Crew Member: VASCO

VASCO is one of the first companions you’ll meet in Starfield and has all the makings of a fan favorite. The utility bot’s design is inspired by actual machines used by NASA. It’s currently unknown what his exact skill set is, but based on what we’ve seen so far, he can back you up in a firefight and will provide much of the game’s comic relief.

Skills: Unknown

Starfield Companion: Sam Coe

If you need an ace pilot to ensure victory in aerial dog fights or a sharpshooter to back you up, then Sam Coe is your guy. Sam is something of a Han Solo-like figure and was a member of the Freestar Rangers, a group of space cowboys. Sam is another of the four main companions in the game and can be found in Akila City. He is also a confirmed romance option for the protagonist.

Skills: Piloting (4), Rifle Certification (3), Payloads (2), Geology (1)ย

Starfield Companion: Barrett

Barrett is one of the first members of Constellation that players can meet during the game’s tutorial. He is described as a “scientist and explorer” and is a great ally to ensure the maintenance of your ship. His top skills are in ‘Starship Engineering’ and ‘Robotics’.

Skills: Starship Engineering (4), Particle Beam Systems (3), Robotics (2), Gastronomy (1)

Starfield Crew Member: Marika Boros

Marika Boros is a crew member that you can hire after encountering her in the Viewport Bar in New Atlantis. Not much is known about Marika at this stage, but if her stats are anything to go by, she knows how to hold her own in a fight. She is much more adept at handling shotguns than other companions, and her biggest strength is Ballistics. If you find yourself in a scuffle in Starfield, Marika is the companion you want by your side.

Skills: Ballistics (2), Shotgun Certification (1), Particle Beam Weapon Systems (1)ย

Starfield Crew Member: Heller

Heller is a crew member that can be recruited after you rescue him from an empty planet. Like Marika, there aren’t too many details surrounding his character. However, he boasts an impressive stat for outpost engineering, meaning that Heller is best put to work monitoring and protecting your outposts from any threats.

Skills: Outpost Engineering (3), Geology (1)

Starfield Crew Member: Adoring Fan

The adoring fan was a consistent source of irritation for many a player back in the days of Oblivion, and in a bit of fan service -or torment- Bethesda has chosen to resurrect him for Starfield. He can only be encountered if you choose the Hero Worship trait in character creation. Believe it or not, though, the adoring fan is actually a fairly useful companion to have in the game. He can occasionally offer gifts to the protagonist and has decent stats in weightlifting and scavenging.

Skills: Weight Lifting (2), Scavenging (1), Concealment (2)ย

That’s all the companions that have been confirmed so far, but it’s only the tip of the iceberg. There are over a dozen companions yet to be revealed that players will encounter for the first time when they play the game.

Of course, the option is there to play through the game solo with no companions, but it’s likely to be a lonely voyage. Your new crew mates are sure to form an integral part of your journey as you explore the stars.
