Alwa’s Legacy, a retro-inspired platformer, is launching on Nintendo Switch on September 29 for $17.99. If you find the name to be familiar, don’t be surprised, it’s the successor to the 2017 Alwa’s Awakening. For those who haven’t played it though, no need to worry. Elden Pixels stated that Alwa’s Legacy is not a direct sequel and you can easily enjoy this “standalone experience” separately without playing the first game.
When it was first released on PC in June, Alwa’s Legacy garnered positive reviews across many publications (and we recommended it as well). To make sure this port’s quality stays consistent, Elden Pixels Game Designer Mikael Forslind said that the Switch version will incorporate all the latest updates and features the game has had since its original release.
Alwa’s Legacy is a huge step up for us in every department. We’ve already had some glowing praise from the Steam community and we’ve made sure that when the game is released on Nintendo Switch, it’ll deliver the best version it can be on that platform.”
Using Zoe’s magic staff, you must solve puzzles, fight off monsters, and find your way back home from the land of Alwa. Along your adventure through Alwa’s Legacy, you will find new items and upgrades that allow you to craft your individual playstyle. Utilize unique skills such as summoning blocks or bouncing off bubbles to find hidden pathways in a nonlinear interconnected world. As a retro platformer staple, quick reflexes are needed to avoid booby traps and pitfalls.
Alwa’s Legacy is Elden Pixels’ tribute to the 16-bit platformers and Metroidvania genre. It mixes classical pixel art aesthetics with contemporary elements, such as a realistic lighting system, modern game design principles, as well as a soundtrack made by chiptune artist RushJet1 (Tuber Simulator, Cave Story+ Switch). Mikael Forslind added the following:
Nintendo has been such a massive inspiration for us and Alwa’s Legacy is in many ways a love letter to some of the amazing memories we’ve had growing up with their games. At the same time, we put every effort into creating a modern experience, so we feel we’ve ended up with a product that has its own voice. We think and hope Nintendo Switch fans are going to love Alwa’s Legacy and we can’t wait for them to experience it later this month.”
