Amber Portwood‘s time with ex-fiancé Gary Wayt throughout this season of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter has raised eyebrows. Now, Wayt is saying everything isn’t quite what it appeared to be on screen. In a comment shared exclusively with Instagram’s @TeenMomFanz, Wayt admitted MTV had some say in his awkward on-screen proposal to Amber. The moment came out of left field — not just for viewers but for co-stars Catelynn Lowell Baltierra and Maci Bookout McKinney, who were also there for the living room declaration of love.
It was real so to speak. It was staged by the show and it wasn’t my idea to propose. I wasn’t ready for that next step but I agreed to it to keep her happy. I thought that’s what I wanted. Yeah.. it was real, we were engaged. It just wasn’t genuine… I didn’t even have to buy the ring.
Additionally, Wayt weighed in on his time as a “missing person.”
Gary Felt He ‘Had No Other Choice’ But to Go Missing
Gary Wayt found himself feeling desperate after an ugly fight with Amber Portwood. He explains that Amber brought up a previous tense discussion between them after her brother’s wedding.
Wayt says they were “intoxicated” when Amber brought up feeling self-conscious about Wayt’s family’s feelings about her past, particularly her “criminal record.”
Because of us drinking, Amber brought up the situation and started a toxic fight with me. I tried…I told her, ‘We are intoxicated. Let’s talk tomorrow.’ But she wanted to talk now.
When the toxic fight went from bad to worse I knew I was going to leave. That’s when she [Amber] found my cell phone, jDubb earbuds, wallet, and um… I think even my toothbrush and deodorant and would not give them to me. I had no other choice but to become a missing person.
Wayt says he was “tired” of “manic episodes” and decided that it was a good idea to abandon the relationship.
“It was the right decision looking back,” he concluded. Amber has not yet responded to the claims made earlier this week.
Since then, Amber has stayed out of the spotlight. Ex Gary Shirley — with whom she shares daughter Leah, 15 — claimed she hasn’t seen the teen since the split.
In the season finale of the latest chapter of Teen Mom, Leah admitted she didn’t want to be part of Amber’s new life with Wayt. The then-couple pitched it to her after revealing the two were engaged.
I don’t want to have anything to do with it and the Gary stuff. She just shows up again and thinks we’re all one big, happy family. I don’t want to be one big, happy family.
The teen has been more outspoken this season. That’s especially true of her feelings when it comes to working on the strained relationship with her mom. In fairness, Amber has also spoken about wanting to improve her relationship with Leah, but finding she’s hitting roadblocks. It will be interesting to see where cameras pick up with the two now that Amber’s life is going in a different direction than what she’d hoped.
