The studio that developed Call of the Sea, a Lovecraftian adventure game, brings about a new kind of adventure that blends two vastly different genres. The Future Games Show Powered By Mana livestream debuted a deeper look into Out of the Blue’s Truman Show-esque side-scrolling adventure with a first-person puzzle-solving game sprinkled on top. American Arcadia is a game that puts the player in the shoes of two characters in two very different locations. One inside Arcadia and one outside.
What Is Arcadia?
Half of that game takes place inside Arcadia, a retro-futuristic world where its citizens live out a peaceful life in a kind of utopia. Unbeknownst to Arcadia’s citizens, they’re being monitored at all times by a world larger than them. The outside world. They are unwitting contestants on a reality show, and if their ratings drop, they get the boot. Or the ax. Enter Trevor.
Game Director Tatiana Delgado Yunquera states:
Trevor is just an average person living a mundane life, but the problem is, since he’s living inside the TV show, that is not interesting for the audience. It doesn’t make him popular. The ratings are not working, and the TV show just wants to get rid of him. So when he realizes that everything was a lie, his life changes totally. That’s the moment when he is going to escape.
American Arcadia Game Play
The portion of the game that follows Trevor inside Arcadia is a 2.5D side-scrolling adventure. This is where you will evade pursuers, solve puzzles, and more while Trevor attempts to escape. The other half of the game takes place outside Arcadia in the real world. That is the first-person portion of the game that follows a yet-to-be-named character. This woman lets the player experience stealth and hacking mechanics along with puzzles. Utilizing different characters gives the player two different perspectives and opens them up to two different gameplay styles.
American Arcadia has no release date yet. It will be available on PC and consoles “soon.”
