Image Comics is bringing the unique team of Andy Samberg and Fall Out Boy’s Joe Trohman together for a new series. Announced during Comic Con, The Holy Roller will team the duo up with legendary comic writer Rick Remender. The three will be joined by fan-favorite artist Roland Boschi for the project. The Holy Roller is described as a mix between Kingpin, Inglourious Basterds, and Batman. It is expected later this year from the comic publisher.
The Holy Roller
An official synopsis of The Holy Roller from Image Comics reveals that the series focuses on pro-bowler Levi Coen. The bowling aficionado must leave his dream job and return to his hometown to care for his ailing father. However, upon returning, he discovers his hometown is overrun with Neo-Nazis! So, he does what every average person would do and decides to defend himself using his precious bowling ball collection. Thus, The Holy Roller is born.
The series is described as equal parts action and humor. Dark comedy is blended with superhero action to tell a unique hero story. Plus, the debut issue clocks in at 42 pages of story. That is practically two entire issues rolled into one. Meanwhile, the issue also features several variants from artists like J.H. William III, Brett Parson, Keron Grant, and Rafael Albuquerque.
Andy Samberg and Joe Trohman and Rick Remender, Oh My!
In a statement, actor Andy Samberg jokingly reveals who exactly this comic is for; “If you have ever found yourself wondering, ‘Why is there no comic book about a vigilante hero who smashes people’s faces in with a bowling ball?’ you are in LUCK, bruv!”
Meanwhile, Rick Remender shared that sometimes even the best comics begin a little silly or over-the-top. However, you soon realize it is really great, and The Holy Roller is one of them. Similarly, Joe Trohman added that this “intensely personal book” will resonate with its readers.
The Holy Roller #1 hits comic book shops and digital platforms on November 22.
