More specifically, an unidentified man dressed in a Batman costume erupted during a Santa Clara public meeting this week in California, angrily accusing city leaders of failing to protect residents ahead of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) anticipated presence at the upcoming Super Bowl.
The incident took place around January 27, during the aforementioned council meeting in the city of Santa Clara, California. It was a joint session of the City Council, city officials, and the Santa Clara Stadium Authority, where residents were invited to comment on preparations for Super Bowl 60, set for February at Levi’s Stadium. Wearing the iconic black cape and cowl, the speaker used his allotted time to condemn what he called the city’s willingness to let federal authorities “walk all over” the community during the high-profile sporting event.
“What the [expletive] are we doing here?” he demanded in opening remarks, arguing officials had months to prepare safeguards. “Can any one of you go home to your children and tell them that you did everything you could to protect their classmates, to protect their grandparents?” he asked. “I don’t think you can.”
Batman then closed with an even sharper rebuke, labeling the council a “group of cowards” and warning they would be “traitors” if they failed to respond. “I’m not begging you,” he said. “I’m demanding that you act… Do something.” The confrontation unfolded against a backdrop of heightened public scrutiny of ICE. ICE has drawn sharp criticism in recent weeks following actions in Minnesota that left two people dead and resulted in the detention of U.S. citizens, fueling protests and calls for the agency to withdraw from the area.
ICE Might Still Proceed in the Super Bowl
Federal agencies did not immediately respond to requests for comment about potential operations near the stadium, as per SFGate. Local leaders, including San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, have acknowledged being told ICE is expected to be involved in Super Bowl security, though the scope of any enforcement activity remains unclear.
Regardless, people online have echoed Batman’s sentiments and complaints, “If you ever had doubts ICE was evil now you know. Vengeance has spoken,” according to a commenter. Some have even pointed out the irony of the situation, as Batman’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne, is a billionaire, “Finally, a billionaire who isn’t bowing down to trump,” jokes a commenter.
