(Full Spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp Ahead)
Ant-Man and the Wasp is now out in theaters and while most of this hilarious film takes place before the events of Avengers: Infinity War, the two post-credits scenes show the ramifications of Thanos’ deadly snap.
First Off, How Does Ant-Man and the Wasp Connect to Avengers: Infinity War?
After successfully saving Janet Van Dyne from the depths of the Quantum Realm, our heroes decide to focus on finding Quantum Particles. These Quantum Particles will apparently help cure the former villain Ghost. Man, they really do like to add the word Quantum before everything.
Scott delves into the Quantum Realm by himself to find these miraculous particles. He then loses communication with Hope, Hank, and Janet. Unbeknownst to him, all three members of the Pym/Van Dyne family have just been erased from existence by Thanos. This post-credits scene ends with Scott trapped in this unknown realm with no way out as he pleads for help.
The second post-credits scene is a bit more light-hearted and presumably takes place around the same time as the first. In Scott’s empty home, an emergency broadcasting signal is blaring on TV. The giant ant that has been living as a stand-in for Lang while he was under house arrest is seen playing the drums, unaware of the crisis that has taken over the world.
What is the Quantum Realm?
I could go into great detail on the Quantum Realm (better known as the Microverse in the comics) but all you really need to know is that this realm is a microscopic universe of sorts that exists outside of time and space.
What Does This Mean for Avengers 4?
To put it simply, time travel is almost guaranteed to be a prominent component in Avengers 4 (and probably the future of the MCU).
During the mid-credits scene, Janet warns Scott to stay away from time vortexes as they wouldn’t be able to save him if he gets stuck. Knowing Scott’s character, he will almost immediately disobey that command and go to one of these vortexes in order to get back home. Where he goes from there is a bit more tricky.
Scott could potentially travel back to before Janet Van Dyne disappears in the Quantum Realm, in an attempt to discover a way back to his time.
He could even travel to a different reality, possibly one where The Avengers have completely lost the fight with Thanos.
The most likely scenario is that Scott will travel a few years into the future. There, he learns about his friends’ (and maybe even his family’s) demise at the fingers of Thanos. This would also confirm the rumor that Avengers 4 will feature a time jump.
Something else that is interesting here is the possibility of Scott escaping his fate. As you know, The Mad Titan erased 50% of the population with the snap of his fingers. Ant-Man might have been one of those unfortunate deaths but his status in the Quantum Realm may have saved him from biting the dust.
Ultimately, we won’t know Ant-Man’s fate until Captain Marvel (at the earliest), which is set to release March 8th, 2019.
