Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York posted on X that she signed a letter from Rep. Ayanna Pressley asking for a federal investigation. AOC said there have already been 10 reported hangings of Black people in the U.S. this year and called them “widespread modern-day lynchings.” The posts pointed to a letter sent to the Justice Department and FBI. They drew a lot of replies, plus Community Notes saying most of the cases cited were ruled suicides and that one is still being investigated as a homicide.

I’m proud to have signed onto @RepPressley ‘s letter to address these widespread modern-day lynchings and put a stop to this racial terror. https://t.co/ISo20mbLyg

The exchange began on X, where Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@RepAOC) replied to a post from Rep. Ayanna Pressley (@RepPressley). Pressley wrote, “Black folks are being found hanged in America,” called the deaths “a national crisis,” and said, “We’re demanding a federal investigation NOW so we can stop modern-day lynchings.”

Ocasio-Cortez added, “This year, there have already been 10 reported hangings of Black people in the U.S.,” and said she was “proud to have signed onto @RepPressley’s letter to address these widespread modern-day lynchings and put a stop to this racial terror.”

The letter, led by Pressley and signed by nearly 60 House Democrats, asked Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel for federal reviews. Pressley’s office said many families have questioned local findings. Community Notes on both posts said most high-profile cases from 2025–26 were ruled suicides by medical examiners and police, with one still a homicide probe, and that framing the deaths as modern-day lynchings is not supported by official findings.

Readers Weigh the Claim Against the Autopsies

Some users pointed to those official rulings. One commenter wrote, “7 were suicide and 3 unsolved. No murders confirmed.” Another said, “With no evidence whatsoever, AOC says these cases that have been ruled suicides are instead ‘lynchings.’”

A third argued the cited cases had been “consistently ruled to be tragic suicides with zero evidence of foul play or racial targeting.”

Other replies focused on the political framing. One user wrote, “AOC saw 9 suicides and one black-on-black hanging and screamed widespread lynchings. She doesn’t fight hate; she manufactures it for clout.”

Another asked, “Why do you do this? We don’t need more manufactured racial tension.”

Elon Musk quoted the thread and asked Grok to “list each of these hangings and identify the race of the murderer,” a request that further fueled discussion of the case-by-case findings.

The dispute over how those deaths should be described is still unfolding, and the letter to the Justice Department leaves the next move with federal officials rather than with the posts themselves.
