‘Trump’s Not Sowing Doubt, You Are’: Critics Push Back as Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal Accuses Trump of Trying to ‘Rig’ the Midterms

Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal accused President Donald Trump’s administration of trying to rig the midterms through disputed voter records. During an interview, she criticized the Justice Department’s threatened legal action against Washington over alleged non-citizen voters. Her remarks drew online criticism as the dispute raised concerns about voter eligibility and ballot counting before Election Day.

Trump and Republicans are doing everything they can to sow doubt and fear in our free and fair elections because they are worried about losing.

Asked whether the department might act before the election, Jayapal described the administration’s actions as a sign of desperation. “They’re going to lose. They’re going to lose big,” she said, predicting a Republican defeat. She accused officials of preparing to challenge the results by portraying the election as unfair or stolen, as in 2020.

The congresswoman cited Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs, who said the federal voter list contained U.S. citizens and inaccurate information. She said Hobbs rejected the department’s request to exclude ballots from people on that list. She also pointed to California court rulings against similar efforts, accusing the administration of attempting to manipulate election outcomes.

Despite her concerns, Jayapal urged voters not to let the dispute discourage them from participating. “Do not let anyone scare you away from that,” she said, emphasizing their right to vote. She added that officials were closely monitoring developments and preparing to protect the election.

Online reactions challenged Jayapal’s accusations, with critics questioning voter verification, Washington’s election procedures, and the state’s handling of voter records.

One critic rejected her claims against Trump, writing, “Trump’s not sowing doubt—you are, by fighting every single check that stops non-citizens from voting.”

Another challenged her warning about voter intimidation, stating, “Washington is all vote by mail. There are no polls for anyone to intimidate anyone.”

The discussion also turned to voter identification requirements. One response argued, “Unless you verify that people are who they say they are before they vote, you cannot claim to run a fair election.”

A separate commenter questioned the state’s handling of voter records, asking, “WA Democrats are the ones creating doubt by refusing to audit WA’s voter roll. Why is that?”

It remains unclear whether the Justice Department will pursue legal action against Washington before Election Day. The dispute over the federal voter list remains unresolved.
