A renewed push by Texas Republicans to end no-fault divorce has sparked a wave of online reactions, with critics questioning how the proposal would affect couples seeking to leave unhappy or unhealthy marriages. The issue quickly gained traction on social media, where many users debated the potential consequences of making it harder to end a marriage without proving fault.

The proposal calls for ending no-fault divorce in Texas, where couples can currently dissolve a marriage without proving that either spouse was at fault. If such a change were ultimately enacted into law, divorcing couples would generally need to establish legally recognized grounds for ending their marriage instead.

Chron reports that the proposal is part of the Texas Republican Party’s legislative priorities, with supporters arguing it would strengthen families and preserve marriages. Critics, however, warn it could create additional barriers for people trying to leave unhealthy or unsafe relationships.

Social Media Reactions

It didn’t take long for the proposal to spark discussion on Reddit, where many users criticized both the policy itself and the politicians backing it. One of the most upvoted comments took aim at Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who recently announced he and his wife, Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton, were divorcing, with one user quipping, “Are they going to wait until Ken Paxton’s is done first?” Another commenter added, “I’m sure there will be carveouts for the wealthy as usual.”

Others focused on the practical implications of ending no-fault divorce. One Reddit user argued that marriage vows are made “before God, not the state,” adding that no-fault divorce has historically given people a safer and less contentious way to leave failing marriages.

Another commenter, who identified themselves as a divorcee, said their attorney “STRONGLY recommends no-fault divorce even if there is fault” because proving fault often makes the process more hostile, particularly when children are involved. Another user summed up their opposition more bluntly, writing, “Weak men who want to trap their wives in marriage, instead of working to make them want to stay.”

While the proposal remains just that for now, it has already reignited a long-running debate over marriage, personal freedom and the role government should play in family life. Whether it ultimately advances or not, it has clearly struck a nerve with people on both sides of the issue.
